Through the 4-H Youth Development program, youth will have an opportunity to:

  • Acquire knowledge, skills and understanding in areas of science and technology, life enrichment, individual and family resources, community environment and natural resources:

  • Demonstrate skills in the production, processing and marketing of food and fiber products.

  • Practice wise consumer decision habits.

  • Improve knowledge about how factors of production, processing, marketing and distribution of agricultural products affect profit and loss.

  • Develop technological skills in the maintenance, repair and safe use of mechanical equipment.

  • Develop the ability to apply research in real life experiences.

Acquire a positive self-concept:

  • Determine personal learning experiences.

  • Acquire skills in interpersonal relationships.

  • Develop the ability to make decisions.

  • Learn and practice goal setting.

  • Develop personal pride in setting goals in achievements and progress.

  • Learn about and accept themselves as a lovable and capable person.

Learn to respect and get along with others:

  • Learn about and accept others as individuals regardless of age, cultural background and geographic location.

  • Demonstrate cooperative skills and attitudes toward working with others.

  • Demonstrate cooperative skills and attitudes toward living in a family.

  • Become aware of global citizenship responsibilities.

Learn and practice leadership skills and fulfill leadership roles:

  • Learn principals of leadership.

  • Improve skills essential to fulfill their leadership responsibilities.

  • Demonstrate effective participation in 4-H clubs, groups and committees.

  • Demonstrate effective group decision-making.

  • Develop skills to effectively assume elected and appointed roles for leading groups.

  • Practice leadership skills by helping others learn.

Learn and use accepted practices for mental, physical, emotional and social health:

  • Acquire knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary for good health.

  • Use good health habits in daily living.

Explore and evaluate career and job opportunities:

  • Acquire knowledge about the world of work - how it functions; its contribution to individual, family and community well-being, and different types of work situations - such as industry, cooperatives, self-employment, etc.

  • Acquire entry level skills necessary for the world of work.

  • Gain knowledge about business and learn entrepreneurship skills.

Establish positive attitudes toward productive use of leisure:

  • Develop the ability to use leisure time constructively.

  • Develop unique talents and interests in creative and performing arts.

  • Practice physical fitness activities.
