Extension Youth Conference

Extension Youth Conference is approaching!  The conference runs from June 16-19 and is on the NDSU campus.  It is planned by the ND 4-H Ambassadors and Center for 4-H Youth Development and is open for anyone to attend, 4-H member or not.  The ambassadors look forward to providing this opportunity for 4-Hers around the state and we need your help to make them aware of it.

You have received registration booklets and posters advertising the conference.   Please mail out the registration packets to all 4-H members who are eligible, ages 13-18 in your county.  Posters can also be handed out at events that take place in the county and at 4-H club meetings.    You may access the registrations booklets and posters from the following link: http://www.ext.nodak.edu/4h/programs/EYC/eyc.htm

Please help us to reach out to all our 4-H members in the state of North Dakota!  This is a great conference that encourages youth to learn new things, meet new people, and experience what 4-H is all about.

Thank you for all of your help in order to “Make the Best Better” through 4-H!  We look forward to working with everyone in order to encourage youth and be excited about 4-H and all of the opportunities that are a part of it.

Dairy Judging

The state 4-H dairy judging contest arrangements are being explored. J. W. Schroeder, Extension Dairy Specialist has asked us to hold Tuesday, June 17 and Friday, June 20 as tentative dates for the event. If the current plans work – the event will be held at the Morton County Fairgrounds in New Salem.  Dr. Schroder is working with several dairies in the area to secure livestock for the event. We will follow up with additional information when details are finalized.

Land Judging

The North Dakota 4-H and FFA Land Judging Contest will be held July 31, 2008. The contest will be hosted by Melissa Hansen at Medina, ND.

There will be no Homesite Contest this year. Practice pit sites will likely be available to teams late in the afternoon of July 30 and the morning of July 31 until about 11:30 a.m. The contest will begin about 1PM. More details will be available at a later date.

Jamestown would be a good place to line up hotel rooms if your team is staying the night before the contest. Extension agents interested in coaching a team for the first time should contact Dave Franzen (david.franzen@ndsu.edu) for information and technical advice. We look forward to seeing you at the event.

NCR Volunteer Forum

Please encourage your 4-H volunteers to attend the next NCR Volunteer Forum in Columbus, OH, November 6-8, 2008. This is also a great professional development opportunity for extension staff. Think Chapman dollars. In past years, the ND 4-H Foundation has offered $100 scholarships to the first ten 4-H volunteers who register for the Forum. I plan to ask them to do this again for the 2008 Forum. To find out more visit Ohio 4-H’s web site at: http://www.ohio4h.org/NCRVF/index.html  A brochure was included in the last month’s ShopTalk attachments. Contact Rachelle if you need another copy.

Notification will be sent out as soon as registration opens. Please share these dates so your volunteers can put this event on their calendar.

Range Camp

Range camp will be held Tuesday, June 17 through Friday, June 20 at the Hanson’s Logging Camp, Amidon. Registration is $110. Contact Dr. Kevin Sedivec for more information. kevin.sedivec@ndsu.edu

Blue Ribbon Enrollment Program

To my knowledge, all counties should be up and running with version 2.6 dated July 17, 2007 (check by clicking on Help and About). If you are not using that version, please let me know – we want to be sure everyone is using the same version so when it comes time this fall to merge records, it can occur without great effort.

Remember, as you re-enroll youth this year to add the activity code for members from military families. Click on the Activity tab in the bottom part of the member screen and add the appropriate branch of the military.

Please contact Holly for Blue Ribbon support at holly.halvorson@ndsu.edu

Red River Farm Network

Radio spots will begin running on Red River Farm Network in late April and May which direct listeners to contact the Foundation office or county offices for more information on these events.  Please help us if you get calls or questions.

If you would like to participate or volunteer the day of the event, please let us know.  These are fun tournaments and have become very important in our fundraising efforts.

Thanks for your help.

Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader … At Least About Tween Development?

For any of you that were unable to attend the Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader … At Least About Tween Development session at Spring Conference, we have seven packets with a CD with the presentation available (first come, first serve.) Please email Sharon at Sharon.Query@ndsu.edu if you would like a packet.

Study of Positive Youth Development

The 4-H Study of Positive Youth Development (PYD), the first-ever longitudinal study to measure the characteristics that contribute to PYD, provides excellent information about how

4-H helps kids be more successful and how communities benefit from 4-H involvement. The release of findings from this study provides a great opportunity for local 4-H programs to promote the now proven benefits of youth becoming involved in their local 4-H programs. To assist with your outreach efforts, 4-H has created the following materials for you to personalize and distribute to raise awareness about the benefits for youth to become involved in 4-H in your community and the benefits of the community to having a 4-H program:

  • Template Press Release
  • Template Radio PSAs
  • Template Drop-in Article
  • Template PowerPoint Presentation
  • Template Flyer
  • Talking Points for External Audiences
  • 10 Tips for Growing, Healthier Happier Teens
  • The 4-H Study of PYD graphic
