How to stay safe on the Internet
Get Permission:
If you are 12 or
under, always get permission from your mom, dad, or guardian before you
do anything on a website, including sending any information about
yourself or others, buying anything or entering any contest or game.
Use a Nickname:
If you get permission from your mom, dad, or
guardian to send information to a website, like your name or email
address, you should never use your full name. Just submit your first
name, a nickname or initials.
4-H encourages parents and
guardians to spend time online with their
children and to participate in the interactive activities offered on the
sites.

More Tips for Safety for Kids
on the Web
- Never give out any personal information such as your address,
telephone number, parent's work address/telephone number, or the name
and location of your school without your parent's permission.
- Tell your parents or guardian right away if you come across any
information that makes you feel uncomfortable.
- Never agree to get together with someone you "meet" online without
first checking with your parents. If your parents agree to the
meeting, be sure the meeting is in a public place and bring your
mother or father along.
- Never send a person your picture or anything else without first
checking with your parents.
- Don't respond to any messages that are mean or in any way
make you uncomfortable. It is not your fault if you get a message like
that. If you do, you should tell your parents right away so that they
can contact the online service.
- Talk with your parents to set up rules for going online, including
the times of day that you can be online, the length of time you can be
online, and appropriate areas for you to visit. Don't access other
areas or break these rules without their permission.
