CHILD DEVELOPMENT

Kids On The Grow Series (Child Development)

The child development unit focuses on the growth and development of the whole child.  Kids taking care of kids, kids taking care of themselves, helping handle emergencies, learning to be home alone, staying healthy and relating to others. Designed for youth K-12. Youth and adult guides wrap around the American Red Cross Babysitting curriculum.


Growing on My Own, Kids on the Grow, Level 1 Project Activity Guide

This project for younger members can be used as part of the Cloverbud program. It is designed for youth in grades K-2. You’ll make friends with a potato! You will make lots of things, like bags, hats, and masks. You will learn to make your home safer for yourself and your family. You’ll also make a special learning place for yourself, create your own clock and become a toy inspector. You may enroll in this project for three years.

Growing with Others, Kids on the Grow, Level 2 Project Activity Guide   (CHIL2) (4HCCS)
                                                                                                                         

This intermediate project is designed for youth in grades 3-6. You will learn about self-care and how to select toys appropriate for different age groups. You will learn about family rules, make a family tree, prepare healthy snacks, check your home for safety hazards and much more! When you complete this unit you will be ready to enroll in the American Red Cross Babysitting Training at your local American Red Cross office or affiliate. You may enroll in this project for three years.

Growing in Communities, Kids on the Grow, Level 3 Project Activity Guide    (CHIL3) (4HCCS)
                                                                                                                                 

In this advanced project for youth in grades 7-10 will build on the skills you developed in the other two levels. You will learn about potential careers in the child development field, do a profile of families in your community, participate in an intergenerational community service project, gain experience as a teacher or coach, develop a car-safe campaign and much more. You may enroll in this project for three years.

CLOTHING & TEXTILES

Decorate Your Duds - Member Manual ( CB105) (web)

This project is embellishment of a garment or accessory. It may be done on a purchased or constructed item, but what is being judged is the embellishment technique, not the construction of the item. The objective is to provide 4-Hers a chance to sample and experiment with a variety of textile crafts and encourage youth to develop creativity, individualism and imagination by creating "one-of-a-kind" garments and accessories.

Quilting for Fun - Member Manual ( CB111) (web)

Quilting is the process of sewing three layers together by hand or machine to form one. The top, a combination of fabrics, is pieced together to form a pattern that may reflect anything from fabric photos of a special event to a traditional design. While this project is new to North Dakota 4-H, quilting has long been a tradition for friends and families. The objective is to provide 4-Hers a chance to explore an art form that is reemerging as a popular social activity that connects generations and encourages creativity.

Beginning sewing skills is aimed at youth in grades 4-6. You will learn to select tools, use the sewing machine, learn about fabrics, simple hand sewing techniques and much more.

A Style of Your Own - Clothing Decisions

A Style of Your Own series is designed to help you learn decision-making skills based on fun, hands-on clothing activities you can do alone or with friends.

This project is designed for youth in grades 6-8. You will learn about your clothing choices and discover your own style as you select your own clothes, learn about clothing advertisements, organize a clothing drive and trade clothes with friends.

This project is designed for youth in grades 9-12. You will learn about your wardrobe, what’s out there, what influences your clothing decisions, how to make informed choices, and to define your own style. You will practice making decisions about clothing purchases, learn about clothing that is flattering, decide what to do with clothing items that are rarely worn, organize a community public service program that focuses on clothing and much more.

Design Detective  (HOME4) (4HCCS)

It's an open and shut case!  Beginning designers seek ideas and discover how the principles and elements of design relate to personal space.  This guide contains creative hands-on activities and connections to DVD and web resources.

Designer in Me  (HOME5) (4HCCS)

Me, a creative designer? Intermediate designers decorate with flair!  By participating in learn-by-doing activities, youth practice design principles, improve creative thinking and self-expression skills.  Focus is on space, lighting, the value in "second time around" items and home and garden construction.

Designer Studio (HOME6) (4HCCS)

Advanced designers practice their creative decision-making and problem-solving skills.  Youth investigate the artistic use of design for indoor and outdoor living spaces.  They explore interests in planning community projects and of design careers through the internet, video and in-person professionals.

This project is an introduction and outline for working with clay and plaster aimed at youth in grades 4-12. You will learn to make articles from clay and plaster for decorative or practical purposes. You can mold a lump of clay, work with a piece of premolded plasterware, and use paints, glazes or other finishes.

This project is an introduction to glues and how they work. It is aimed at youth in grades 5-10. You will learn about glues and their properties, selecting a glue and glue safety.

MONEY MANAGEMENT

Financial Champion Series

Youth will become financial champions and learn how to make financial decisions. This project teaches about needs and wants, money personalities and values, goal setting, communication, ways to use and save money, the benefits and drawbacks of credit, advertising influences, consumer decision making and how to select financial services. Youth can complete the activities independently or in a group. An interactive web-based game is available to help teach the concepts in the project.

NEEDLE ARTS

This project is an introduction to crochet planned for youth in grades 5-12. You will discover how to buy yarn, thread and equipment, learn crochet and finishing techniques, care for crocheted items and much more.

Embroidery for Enjoyment, Unit 1 - Member Manual   (NEED0)   $2

This beginning project is aimed at youth in grades 3-12. The embroidery project is designed to encourage creativity and meet the needs of each individual member. The project includes crewel embroidery. You will learn basic embroidery stitches, techniques and selection of yarn.

Needlepoint, Member Manual  (NEED1)   $2

This project is an introduction to needlepoint. It is aimed at youth in grades 4-12. You will learn about materials, basic stitches, and techniques for needlepoint embroidery.

Advanced Embroidery Techniques - Member Manual   (NEED2)  $2   

An outline and plan which include advanced embroidery techniques for youth in grades 8-12 who want to expand their embroidery skills. You will use the project outline to develop an individual project using advanced embroidery techniques.


This guide is designed to assist individuals, families, clubs and groups in selecting and planning their 4-H projects. It provides most of the information necessary to make project choices. Check the actual project manual for suggested requirements.

Each project is listed with the following information: PROJECT NAME, PROJECT LEVEL, ENROLLMENT OR MATERIAL ORDER NUMBER. The project enrollment or material order number matches the names an codes on the member or leader enrollment form.

4HCCS, COST, or WEB indicates the cost of materials or where they can be located. See 4HCCS below for clarification.

SUGGESTED GRADE LEVEL indicates for whom the project was designed. Most projects are divided according to three levels: beginners, intermediate, and advanced, and were designed to be appropriate for youth in that grade level. Parents and volunteers need to help the member decide which level is appropriate for them.

The PROJECT DESCRIPTION provides a brief listing of some of the learning experiences and activities that are included in the project.

ADDITIONAL PUBLICATIONS includes other materials, such as Judging Guides or Records, that are available for that project.

Use member or or volunteer enrollment or re-enrollment forms to order literature and materials for 4-H projects from your county Extension Office.

4HCCS is the nationwide curriculum development system of the Cooperative Extension Service. Its mission is to provide quality experiential based curriculum products to 4-H and other non-formal youth development organizations. North Dakota is one of the states that helped to develop this system. Many materials in this guide are 4HCCS materials, and they are identified as (4HCCS).
