COUNTY EVENTS AND PROGRAMS

County and County 4-H Council-sponsored competitions give members the change to test their skills and accomplishments and earn awards. These activities vary from county to county. Check with your county Extension Agent for more information.

Communication Arts

Learn to improve your communication skills! Participate in your club and  county communication arts program by giving a commercial, short take,  broadcast, speech, demonstration, illustrated talk, dramatic presentation, or an interpretative reading.  Get more information here.
 

County Achievement Days or Fairs

Most counties hold an Achievement Day or Fair. Interview judging is generally used as part of the process of evaluating a member's project and completed exhibit item(s).

AREA AND STATE EVENTS

Aerospace Camp

Aerospace Camp is a two-day program at the UND Aerospace Center. Highlights include using the flight simulators, air traffic control trainers, and aircraft displays.

4-H Extension Youth Conference

The 2008 4-H Extension Youth Conference will be an exciting and fun filled experience. This year's theme is "Where Are You At? Where Are You Going?." Participants will also be able to participate in dances, a talent show, recreational and educational programs, community service and a banquet. Cost for registration will be $150.00.   The registration booklet will be available in a PDF format at a later date.

At EYC you'll meet people from all around North Dakota, and to get involved in many activities and committees like Reactor Board, Connections and Communication Arts, and some will get the chance to try out to become a North Dakota 4-H Ambassador. If you are interested in becoming an Ambassador, contact your extension office or the state 4-H office for an application.

EYC takes place on the campus of North Dakota State University in Fargo. The Ambassadors and extension agents will be there to host and run the conference. This year's dates are Monday, June 16 through Thursday, June 19, 2008. The Conference is open to anyone age 13 through 18.

Western 4-H Camp

Have fun with lots of kids at the Western 4-H Camp near Washburn. Western camp offers camps for different interests, including: Livestock, Horse, Clover, Outdoor Skills, Teen, and Natural Resources.

North Dakota 4-H Horse Show

The North Dakota 4-H Horse Show is held in July, during the North Dakota State Fair in Minot. 4-H members may compete in all classes where they have been certified as a Blue Ribbon winner in a county qualifying event.

North Dakota Winter Show

The North Dakota Winter Show is held in early March in Valley City. The Winter Show provides opportunities for 4-H members to exhibit crop and animal project work in various 4-H and open class divisions. It is also host to the state 4-H Livestock and Crops Judging contests. Find a list of the Winter Show activities on the 4-H Forms page.

North Dakota State Fair

The North Dakota State Fair is held in Minot in July. North Dakota state 4-H activities and contests conducted at the State Fair include: Clothing Revue, Project Expo, Livestock Shows, Hose Show, Sheep Fitting Contest, Small Animal and Poultry Show, Consumer Choices Contest, and Horse Judging Contest.

Exhibits qualify to be entered at the State Fair by placing in the Blue Ribbon or other comparable honorable mention group at a fair or achievement day conducted under the supervision of the NDSU Extension Service County Office.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR INDIVIDUALS

North Dakota 4-H Ambassadors

The North Dakota State 4-H Ambassadors team consists of approximately 50 young adults from across the state who are actively involved in 4-H and want to share their knowledge and experience with others. The Ambassadors coordinate many activities which involve teaching youth and adults about topics such as leadership. teamwork, citizenship, and much more.

 4-H Ambassadors specialize in planning and facilitating 4-H events, such as the annual statewide 4-H Extension Youth Conference, workshops, training sessions, regional events, and countless other activities. They strive to create events that are fun, educational, skill building, and promote self-improvement. They endeavor to be active volunteers for 4-H programs in every country of North Dakota.

4-H Ambassadors are selected through an application, screening, and interview process in January, or at the North Dakota 4-H Extension Youth Conference in June. Applicants must be between the ages of 16 and 22.

PARTICIPATION IN NATIONAL EVENTS

National Dairy Conference

National 4-H Dairy Conference is open to 4-H youth age 15-18 interested in the dairy industry and who carry dairy and dairy-related projects.  The conference is held at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, in conjunction with the World Dairy Expo, at the end of September.

The objectives of the National 4-H Dairy Conference are to help 4-H youth:

  • Learn more about the dairy industry
  • Learn more about careers in the dairy industry
  • Develop additional competence in a special-interest area of the dairy industry
  • Practice leadership and group participation skills

Any youth meeting the above criteria can attend.  Partial scholarships for the trip are offered through the North Dakota 4-H Foundation and the American Dairy Association of North Dakota.

Applications are due June 1 and are available at the county extension office.

Citizenship Washington Focus (CWF)

Spend a week in Washington DC. See the sights and learn about our government in action. CWF is held in June or July for youth ages 15 -19, and is open to any youth who apply. Applications are due by March 15th of each year. The cost is approximately $1500.

National 4-H Conference

Have a voice in the 4-H Program! National 4-H Conference is a week-long program held at the National 4-H Center near Washington, DC. Its two purposes are 1) to involve youth in  4-H program development, and 2) to strengthen and continue development of 4-H public relations programs. The National Conference also provides opportunities to make new friends and see the sites in our nation's capitol. Applications for this event are due by August 1st each year.

National 4-H Congress

National 4-H Congress is held in November-December, but the location varies. Congress will be held in Atlanta, GA. The program provides opportunities for education, cultural enrichment, and service learning. Applications for this event are due by August 1st each year.
