Adventures in Spaces

In 1988, the W.K. Kellogg Foundation awarded a grant to the Michigan State University 4-H Youth programs to develop a program that would help young people better prepare for the future. The result of this effort is SPACES: Preparing Kids for a High Tech and Global Future, an initiative that helps early adolescents (kids age 9-15) meet the complex and changing need of their world. SPACES focuses on three key areas:

  • Outer Space - Discovering the explorer in me, discovering the scientist in me, discovering the inventor in me.
  • Inner Space - Getting to know more about me, interacting with others, coping with the changes in my life;
  • Shared Space - Similarities and differences of the earth's peoples; food, shelter and clothing of the earth's peoples; our common Earth (ecology and relationships); learning how space is shared.

Talking with TJ

Talking with TJ is an exciting educational program designed to improve the teamwork and conflict resolution skills of second through fourth graders. The program teaches skills children will use throughout their lives. It encourages children to work and play together in caring and cooperative ways. The program combines education and entertainment into two series of high-quality video stories and fun opportunities to practice new skills.

Teamwork: The Teamwork series offers a unique approach to teaching children about cooperation and teamwork. It is designed to help children learn skills in planning, cooperating and appreciating differences.

Conflict Resolution: The Conflict Resolution series is designed to teach children skills in managing anger and choosing alternatives to violence, respecting different points of view when trying to resolve a problem and using friendly words, rather than fighting words, to communicate feelings and ideas.

Talking with TJ is available from the county extension office.
