Black Flies |
The bites of black flies (buffalo gnats) cause welts and itching. At first, the bites are not noticeable but generally within an hour or so, swelling and intense itching begins and may continue for several days. Black flies characteristically bite humans around the back of the neck, ears, eyes and forearms.
Spraying your yard with an insecticide provides very little relief from these pests. Black flies are fairly resistant to most insecticides. Also, the insects coming into a treated area won't be affected once the spray has dried. The only practical means of obtaining relief from black flies is to make liberal and repeated use of insect repellents when participating in outdoor activities. Choose a high strength repellent such as Deep Woods Off or a similar brand. Apply to the back of the neck, hairline, face area and forearms. Do not allow repellents to come in contact with the eyes, nose or mouth as this will cause burning.
