Watering the Lawn

During the hot months of July and August you may have to water your lawn to keep it in good condition, but don't water your lawn too often and when you do, water it deep.

The average loss of water from a grass covered area through evaporation and transpiration is about one inch plus per week. This may go even higher in the hot windy days of mid-summer. If you are using an average size hose with average water pressure it takes about two hours to apply an inch of water. If your hose is small or your water pressure low. it takes more time to apply this amount of water

One way to get the water output of your sprinkler system is to set small straight sided tin cans at different intervals in the sprinkling area and catch the water over a period of time. Then measure the water and calculate the rate of output from your system This simple method will also give you an idea of the distribution pattern of your sprinkler.

Watering your lawn can keep it green and healthy throughout the hot months of summer. However, don't get carried away with frequent light waterings which can lead to more serious lawn problems.
