Pry
into a puzzle of how raw
products from the Red River Valley are transformed into a food that
anybody can identify with...Pizza! Every year 4th graders from Grand
Forks, Pembina, and Walsh counties attend a hands-on learning program
called "Experience
Agriculture, Special Assignment: Pizza" hosted by NDSU
Extension Service and the North Dakota Farm Bureau.
Children
today may be just a generation or two removed from the farm, but the sad
fact is, many young people no longer have direct ties to the land.
Many have never been on a farm. Many have no concept of our region's
rich agricultural heritage. Many, even in this agricultural state,
do not fully understand where food originates or the processes involved in
getting it to the dinner table. Special Assignment: Pizza
encourages students to trace the many ingredients found in pizza
to their origins on farms and ranches as they go from booth to booth.
"Experience Agriculture: Special Assignment: Pizza"
was designed to enhance North Dakota studies being taught in the 4th
grade. The goal of the project is to foster a better understanding
and appreciation of the region's agricultural heritage and
abilities. The following sponsors have provided funding to make this
program and it's goals possible:
- Sharon Lutheran Church
- American Crystal Sugar
- North Dakota State Mill; NoDak Electric
Cooperative
- Simplot Soil Builders of
Cavalier
- Farm Bureau of Grand
Forks, Walsh and Pembina Counties
- Grand Forks County Ag Improvement
Association
- Walsh County Crop Improvement Association
- Farm Credit Services of Grand
Forks
- Pembina County Crop
Improvement Association
- Eastern Grand Forks County Soil Conservation
District
- AGSCO
Comments from participating teachers:
My students have a greater understanding of local
economy/culture. The farm students were able to feel pride in
their contributions.
-
They get a first hand look at these ag seeds and
products. The students also enjoy hearing about it from some
of the farmers.
- At the end of the student's journey, they will have a new appreciation
for farms and the many products agriculture provides each of us every day.
