NORTH DAKOTA 4-H WEBSITE

4-H SHOWCASE EVENTS:

SEW AND SHOW:

Pre-Teen 4-H members must construct half or more of the clothing being modeled. Teen participants must construct the major part of the clothing being modeled.

BUY AND SHOW:

4-H member must purchase or recycle a major item of clothing which relates to wardrobe plan. Item selected must be appropriate for modeling in a public revue.

4-H PROJECT EXPO:

Members are involved by developing an educational table display that is related to one of their 4-H Projects. You are to select and research a topic or project directly related to a 4-H project in which you are enrolled. Posters must be prepared or examples to illustrate steps and add interest. The entire display must fit on a card table. Participants arrange their display and stand near it at all times, neatly dressed including a white shirt, 4-H emblem.

4-H SET-UP - July 5 – 6:00 p.m.

All 4-H Members and Leaders are to attend this work night. It takes the effort of everyone to prepare for fair days. Thank You! All exhibits will be displayed in the Commercial Building. The clubs have been divided up and will be responsible for one area as follows:

Horse Arena: Silver Horseshoes

Livestock Barn: Red Willow Lakers

Green Morton Building (South of Livestock Barn) Flying Peppers & Jolly Haymakers

We will clean this building because we use it for the Derby Burger Supper

The fair board will clean the kitchen, commercial building and bathrooms.

All members participating in North Dakota State 4-H competitive events except Clothing Revue will be neatly dressed and must wear a solid colored white, yellow, gray or green shirt/blouse with the 4-H emblem prominently displayed, and securely fastened, on the front. Safety pins should not be used since they do not meet the ‘securely fastened’ criteria. If pins are used, they should be securely fastened on all sides of the 4-H chevron and the pins should be placed on the inside of the garment. Participants must also wear dark jeans/slacks/skirts. Use of club and county names, and other identification, cannot be printed on the clothing because it conflicts with the objective to have a dress code that eliminates ‘real or perceived advantage’ based on how youth dress for participation.

Griggs County 4-H events will accept shirts, which have a club or county name printed on the shirt. Griggs County members are required to abide by the dress code for Interview Static & Livestock Judging, Horse Show, 4-H Family Supper, Premium Sale, Derby Supper. The county labeled 4-H shirts are not allowed at 4-H events outside of Griggs County.

4-H REGISTRATION & INTERVIEW JUDGING: 4-H interview judging will be held on Friday, July 7 in the Commercial Building on the fairgrounds. Your registration form is due in the Extension Office no later than July 3. We will begin at 3:00 p.m. with all clubs present at this time. If you are unable to attend, PLEASE request an absentee form. Exhibits entered without an absentee form will be for display only.

1. A registration folder will be available as you enter the building. This folder must be presented to each judge at the interview stations. The judges initial and check the ribbon placing in your folder.

2. When you have completed your interview judging, return the folder to the registration table. You must return this folder, as it will be the only record we will have of your exhibit placement. Your pre-registration form is found at the back of this handbook.

3. Please remember that you are not limited at the county level to the number of exhibits in each class. The only restriction is that you are allowed only one exhibit per lot per 4-H member. The North Dakota State Fair rules are different, so please check their rules.

4. Please remember that any project done in school, which receives a grade, is not eligible for 4-H Judging.

5. All 4-H exhibits must be interview judged, which simply means that the judge and 4-H member evaluate the exhibit together. The 4-H member brings the exhibit to the respective judge, depending on the item being entered. The member and judge discuss the article. The judge will ask questions as to method of construction, problems the member encountered and any special circumstances, which determine the placing. The judge will be given the option of waiting on ribbon placement until all projects in that lot have been interview judged.

6. Your exhibit must be pre-registered to be interview judged. If you pre-register an exhibit, but did not complete the item, please report this to the respective judge listed in your folder. The judge will the cross this exhibit off of your list and theirs.

LEADERS: Our judge’s roster is complete with five of the six static judges being new to our fair! I am asking that one leader / parent assist each judge by recording the blue, red, white placements on the 4-H registration form, placing exhibits on the shelves and recording the grand and reserve placements. A short meeting is scheduled for 2:45 p.m. on July 7, with all judges and helpers for the static displays. After the grand and reserve exhibits are chosen by the judge, please move them to one of the display shelves which will be marked 2006 OUTSTANDING 4-H EXHIBITS.

4-H PREMIUM SALE:

As you were previously informed, this event will see some changes. It is a general consensus that not enough money is being channeled back to the 4-H member and some premium buyers are frustrated with the structure of current system. The following changes will be put into effect at the 2006 4-H Premium Sale.

Animal Exhibits: To include, but not limited to: Poultry, Rabbits, Goats, Sheep, Hogs, Beef, Dairy & Horses

In each category: Grand – Open bid, no cap

Reserve – Bid not to exceed $10 less than Grand

Blue – Bid not to exceed $10 less than Reserve and so on

Static Exhibits:

In each category: Grand – Open bid, no cap

Reserve – Bid not to exceed $10 less than Grand

If each 4-H member has not taken a premium through in any category, they will be allowed to take their highest static exhibit through. This will assure that every child has an opportunity to participate in the premium sale.

Ten percent (10%) of each premium sold will be returned to the 4-H council to cover various expenses. If a shortfall in funds occurs, the committee states that parents and members of the 4-H clubs will be prepared to do fundraisers to make up the difference.

The committee looks forward to your input and feedback of the new system. The desire is to provide a fair and equitable program for all youth interested in the 4-H program.

4-H - DERBY SUPPER: The derby burgers will be served by the 4-H leaders, parents and members at the demolition derby on Saturday, July 8.
