Winter wheat is making a comeback in the area due to preventive planting acres. The key to good winter wheat production is winter survival. Snow cover can increase winter survival rates. The use of standing residue or flax strips can increase snow cover. The following production practices can be used to increase the productivity of HRWW.
Phosphorus will help in increasing winter hardiness. Ten to fifteen lbs/A is recommended.
Excessive Nitrogen will reduce winter hardiness.
Wheat streak mosaic can be a problem in HRWW. This is a viral disease that is spread by aphids. In order to try and prevent infection in the fall we must break the "Green Bridge". This means to destroy volunteer wheat and grassy weeds prior to planting.
Plant HRWW in our area by Sept. 15th.
The contact for blackbird control in our area is Ron Gore: 701-425-1487. He covers the following counties: Griggs, Grand Forks, Nelson, Steele, Traill and northern Barnes.
