Wheat  Leaf Rust

Reports of wheat leaf rust in Griggs and surrounding counties.  The level of infection has varied from field to field depending on variety and growth stage.  Fields should be monitored since recent rains have created a favorable environment for rust development and spread.   The following table was prepared by the NDSU Extension Plant Pathology Department that lists the reaction of commonly grown varieties for rust.  Either Tilt or Folicur fungicides are registered for control.  The following link will provide more infomation, NDSU publication PP589, Wheat Leaf Rust.

Green Ash Rust

Several samples of rust on green ash have been brought into the office this past week.  This is disease can cause leaves to drop and cause deformities of branches and new growth.  Normally this disease is not a problem and controls measures are not necessary.  The following photo's show what this disease looks like.  Notice the orange appearance of this disease.

Project Safe Send

Project safe send is sponsored by the ND Department of Agriculture to help North Dakota citizens dispose of old pesticides and other hazardous materials.  A collection site at Finley has been scheduled for Thursday, July 18th at the Department of Transportation located on ND Hwy 32 on the north edge of Finley.  Collections begin at 9:00 am to 3:00 pm.  For more information, contact the Griggs County Extension office or the ND DOT @ 1-800-242-7535 and ask for Project Safe Send.

Sunflower Beetles Are Plentiful

I have been seeing high populations of sunflower beetles and eggs on sunflower plants.  Be sure to monitor sunflowers the next week to check for numbers of larvae and how much defoliation has occurred.  Threshold for larvae are 10 to 15 larvae per plant and defoliation levels of 25 to 30%.  Insecticides Registered for Use.

Leafy Spurge Flea Beetle Collections Beginning
