Howdy!!!!
As I write my article this morning the sun is shinning bright with a chance
of thunderstorms in the forecast tonight. I am not going to ask for rain at
this point but a nice half inch of rain would sure even the ground out for
drying and also clean everything up. I worked on our yard this past weekend and
even though I have plenty to do for another couple of weeks. It is, however,
looking much better thanks to my neighbor, Finley. He was so kind to bring his
lawn sweep over and took care of the minor things laying around, thanks Finley.
I even managed to get our boat home to give it a work over. Soft water will
soon be here and I like to be ready.
Snow Mold!!!
Snow mold has shown it face all around many yards this spring. This mold
attacks the lawn, usually after a heavy snow pack winter over the grass. The
lawn is not allowed to dry/air out and thus the perfect area for snow mold to
appear. Snow mold is usually present in the spring when snow has fallen in the
fall, on unfroze ground. Mold usually starts growing under the snow and is held
constant because of the melting snow, keeping the surface moist for an extended
period of time.
Fungicides can be used in the fall to help prevent snow mold. Fungicides containing benomyl, iprodione or methyl thiophanate work sufficient in the control of snow mold. Treatment should take place when soil temperatures are below 60. F.
Snow mold can also be discouraged by not applying fertilizer late in the fall season.
To prevent matting of the grass, keep mowing the lawn until the grass stops growing in the fall.
