Howdy!!!!!
I am writing this article on Thursday of last week as I and others are headed for a 4 day fishing trip away from Devils Lake. I really do like fishing Devils Lake and the great fishery that it is but there is something to be said to check out a new location. It is kind of like the easterner’s coming our direction to fish even though they have the land with 10,000 lakes. I do know that we are heading into 100 degree weather and that does not sound very exciting but boiling here or there what difference is it.
The fourth of July was really something this year with all the brilliant fireworks around. I have been so tired since Dad and Mom’s sale that I did not hear the young folks shooting theirs off around us on the 3rd. It is also a great time to see all the relatives and friends that seem to appear out of nowhere on the holiday season. It was great fun to get to visit with my sisters and families and also with Deb’s family members but when the dust settles it is always good to see them home safely.
There have been many questions lately about when to water and not to water. Try not to water during the evening hours and if you do water your lawn or garden make sure to soak it very good. A light dusting of water can do more harm than anything. I have installed another soaker hose on the south side of my drive way and what a difference that makes. It takes about 8 hours to do a good job of wetting the soil structure but upon completion the soil seems to stay more stable. Another to remember that topdressing the soil with grass clippings can also be a life saver as it shades the soil and helps conserve the moisture that is present. REMEMBER NOT TO USE GRASS CLIPPINGS THAT HAVE BEEN TREATED WITH AN HERBICIDE AS MANY FLOWERS AND PLANTS ARE VERY SUSCEPTABLE TO HERBICIDES.
My garden is off and running with a very bountiful harvest as well. I had my first potatoes, beets, peas and carrots last Wednesday. Generally the size is not that great this time of year but with the heat, early, and the watering I have done I have been pleasantly surprised by the bountiful harvest.
