Howdy!!!

I am not asking for rain but we do have parts of the county including my yard that could use ½-3/4 inch of rain.  I am asking for a lot but do not need a gully washer.  I did get my grass planted this past week with another experiment, we’ll see if it works.  I planted part of my yard with year old seed and the other part of the yard with new seed but a different percentage mixture of grass.  My sprinklers are in and are getting a good workout.  I am determined to get grass to grow when the weather is warmer even though we should, at this point, wait till fall.  As the weather warms up it is very hard to stay ahead of heat with water, thus the reason for many lawns not getting off to a good start.  Our perennials are looking very interesting with some being very well mannered and others are a little excited by the space they are overtaking.  I have also started the long process of constructing our fish pond.  I am hoping for a mid summer completion date in 2007.  There are many details in building a good fish pond and am learning on the go with some changes already made.

Yellowheaded Sawfly??

We should be on the look out for the yellowheaded sawfly on our spruce trees.  We have accumulated enough growing degree days that these little needle eating insects should be out.  If you have a spruce tree that seems to be losing it’s needles and am not sure why you might have this pesty little insect attacking your trees.  If you check your trees, look for a little stripped green worm with a dark colored head.  Upon finding one you might find them curl into an S shaped figure and maybe stand up a little, not to be alarmed as they will not hurt you but those are the things to look for.  For control measures; insecticides such as Sevin and Tempo work quite well against the little rascal.  For more information about this insect or any other hort. question please call the Extension office at 701-662-7030 or 701-662-7027.
