Howdy!!!!
Here we are “wedding week”. What are the chances that our household will be
normal and to add Thanksgiving in there. Well, we’ll get through it and have a
good time in the process. It is always fun to get friends, relatives and
families together. I called one last night and sounds like he will be here for
the entire 4 days of the holiday and wedding. I am sure I will need plenty of
sleep next week. We will have folks from around the world attending this
wedding as Christine’s fiancé is from New Zealand with friends coming from
Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. I guess I bring this up as we are
always facing many new and exciting challenges, in our everyday life, and for
those folks coming to the United States for the first time will definitely see
things they have never dreamt about. The same thing goes through our own
everyday activities and the reason for the programming we offer throughout the
year, from the Extension office. We try to stay on the outer edge of
programming that offers new strategies to your farming, ranching, gardening or
just your everyday activities. One such an event is “Ranchers Night Out”. The
topics of the night; which will be held at Lake Region Livestock, (Thursday,
November 30, 6 pm) is Cow Nutrition and Swath Grazing. Cow nutrition is not
something new, as many of us have fed cows for many years, but with the
different feed stuffs available to us today, there are ways to cut costs and
still maintain good cow nutrition. Dr. Greg Lardy (NDSU Beef Specialist will
visit about cow nutrition) but something new that might fit into your changing
strategy could be swath grazing during the winter months. Now we know that snow
can alter our feeding strategies but the mother cow and also adapt to new
strategies. Our presenter for this topic is a cow boy from Pipestone,
Manitoba. He actually feeds his cows using this technique and likes the many
benefits this new feeding strategy produces for his ranch. Don’t forget about
the free supper provided by Lake Region Livestock and surrounding Extension
offices (Ramsey, Benson, Nelson, Towner, Cavalier and Rolette). Another new
experience being provided in the cattle business is the opportunity for
producers to try a Feed Out experience at the Carrington Research Center.
Cattle producers enrolled in this project will have their cattle on display at
Lake Region Livestock from 2-7 pm for producers to view and will then be loaded
for Carrington to be put on feed. This Feed Out allows producers to remain in
control of their calves and see the benefits of feeding their own cattle to
slaughter. “Another great learning experience”.
