Howdy!!!
Well, it finally happened, frost in parts of the county over the weekend. I have heard of unconfirmed reports of temps in the upper 20’s. My home did not receive any frost as my tomatoes and vines are still doing very fine however on my way to Warwick on Sunday morning I did get to see the lake steaming, which was an eerie feeling as I drove by. I know by the look of the steam, on the lake that the air temperature had definitely dropped considerably even though I do not have a thermometer at home. The nice cool weather sure made for a very comfortable day to work on our new back yard venture. I find, as each day goes by, working like that lets me know I am getting a little older and definately should loose some weight and even though I am not in the best of shape I did walk some of the hills along the Sheyenne yesterday (Grouse hunting) and did much better than I thought I would. We also had another wreck in our yard over the weekend. Our Harrelson apple tree lost part of its sculpture. This is a very good example of not paying attention to details on our landscape plants. The leader of this apple tree became so heavy with apples that is broke off. I have talked to many apple growers with the same results over the last few weeks. This is a very good reminder to us, that as our trees flower in the spring we need to take precautions to eliminate the problems that can arise from heavy apple production. If I would have either pinched of half of the flowers or pinched off half of the apples that had set on our apple tree our good little apple tree would have made the harvest run. We should let this be a very good reminder to all of us, to eliminate any problems with our trees, treat them as if it is their last year. Just a minute ago I had a gardener come in and ask what he should do with his apple tree as he had two major branches break off a 15 year old tree. The solutions are not easy at that point but extreme pruning might be needed to try to even out the tree or possibly even removal, depending on the severity of the breakage.
