Howdy!!!!

Well after this past weekend I am ever glad I live in North Dakota.  Deb, mother-in-law (Mary) and I were in Minneapolis to gain a new son-in-law and bother-in-law and after a few missed turns finally made the trip.  Deb and I had a few stressful discussions as she was part of my guidance system and also found out that some folks have a tough time deciding which way is right and which way is right.  Deb laughed, after our arrival, that we came this direction for a wedding and leaving with another couple getting divorced.  People driving at the speed of sound also puts a high stress value on one’s heart.  For those of you that have traveled through that community, knowing which lane to be in ahead of time, traveling is a piece of cake.  The wedding went without a hitch but I have definitely decided that my final tour of singing has come to an end.  I tried to have my final tour from my daughter’s wedding and talked into something I knew better.  The unfortunate thing is there might be one more wedding.  We ended the day in a beautiful park, along the Mississippi, and had a “really” enjoyable afternoon.  Music was provided all day, the newly weds relaxed (more than any I have witnessed) and many bodies found out they are not 20 years old anymore after numerous games of volleyball.  Great 4 days away with family but, as mentioned earlier, I am really glad to be home.

The crops were really surprising on this trip.  I could not believe how dry a large part of our trip encountered.  From about Barnsville to the cities, corn was really hurt.  In some areas I am not sure if the crop will even make corn.  The rest of the way found crops looking pretty good with harvest moving along quite nicely.  Hopefully we can get our crop off before any more bad storms move in like what happened to Northwood last night and surrounding area.  My prayers and sympathy goes to the people in the Northwood area.

I was asked last week about numbers of different crop seeds that would equal a bushel of loss from either a combine or from a hail loss.  The numbers below are good examples of how much needs to be thrown over the back of a combine or had been shattered from either wind or hail.

            Spring Wheat  20        seeds/sq.ft =1 bu./acre
            Durum                          16        seeds/sq. ft =1 bu./ acre
            Barley                          15        seeds/sq.ft = 1 bu./acre
            Soybeans                     4          4 beans/ sq.ft =1 bu./acre
            Corn                            2          2 seeds/sq.ft = 1 bu./acre
            Sunflower oil                5          seeds/sq.ft = 1 bu./acre
            Sunflower confection    2.5       seeds/sq.ft = 1 bu./acre
            Pinto Beans                  2.5       seeds/sq.ft = 1 bu./acre
