Howdy!!!!!
Winter is here, you have to admit though it sure is pretty. It does
however, make for difficult travel and also creates more shoveling at home, but
to look at any spruce, with snow on them and it is very pretty. As I write this
article the snow is falling down lazily through the sky. Now, on the flip side,
we do not need any strong winds or we will have a mess. Winter weather driving
sure does play tricks on most people minds however, as you see many fender
benders and people in the ditches. Just this morning, there was a car in the
ditch, on the way to work, luckily no one appeared hurt.
You can really tell though, even with the snow and all, that spring is coming. I have started receiving phone calls about tree and flower plantings this spring. The phone call this morning was about tiny mites on house plants. There are many good insecticides available, to use on house plants, but the easiest might be give the plants a good washing. Another alternative is the use of insecticidal soap. This is available at most nursery shelving’s.
Lake Region Hort. Day!!!
Here is your chance to get the spring bug started, at our new Gardening
Saturday. Gardening Saturday will be Saturday, March 17 in the Memorial
building (Devils Lake). The fun day will start at 9 am and should conclude
about 2:30. There will be many topics covered and a noon meal provided,
along with coffee breaks. Topics to be covered will include “What’s New for
2007” (Ron Smith, NDSU Extension Horticulturist), “Everything to know about
bulbs” (Corine’s Garden, Pekin), “High yield Gardening” (Carrie Schumacker,
Walsh County Extension), “What’g bugging our trees and shrubs” (Steve Sagaser,
Grand Forks Extension), “Square foot Gardening” (Ron and Betty Smith), and”The
Perfect Container” (Holly Mawby). There is a pre-registration fee of $15
(due by March 14) with $20 at the door. There will be door prizes all day
long so hurry on in and pre-register for the day. This day is going to replace
our horticulture classes of the past.
Coffee Meetings!!!!!
It is also that time of year again for producer coffee meetings. It is hard
to believe it is already here but spring is just around the corner. Terry
Gregorie and myself will be bringing donuts and coffee so come with questions on
this spring’s planting questions or even growing questions for Terry. We have
scheduled coffee meetings around the county, as the Calendar indicates below.
We will be at Garske Elevator at 8 am, Edmore CHS at 10:30 am on March 5 and
will be in Starkweather CHS elevator at 8 am and Hampden Café at 10 am.
This will be the third year of doing these coffee meetings and has been very
well attended with excellent questions for Terry. SO, STOP IN AT ONE OF THE
COFEE MEETING SITES AND JOIN THE CONVERSTATION.
