Howdy!!!
What a nice weekend we had this past one. I did not realize, until last night, how hot the day was on Sunday until I laid down in bed and realized that I burn’t my neck and upper arms. It sure was good to see the sun and almost hear everything growing. We had a birthday party yesterday for our grandson and wow does he know how to get around now. The walking thing went from learning to full fledged motivating in a matter of a month or so. It is fun to watch young men and women learn those first steps and look around to see who is looking. It is like our crops and gardens with moisture and then finally the sun and almost hear them grow, taking full advantage of the nice weather. Things will change very quickly now if we can take advantage of the sun and let mother nature move the rain away for awhile. They accumulated a lot of rain in the southwestern part of the state over the weekend and reminded me a lot of the middle 90’s. We sure don’t need that. It is time to get those farmers back in the field, to finish their spring planting and timely pesticide applications.
The wet conditions we are experiencing and the delayed planting has created some concerns for area farmers. In general we still have dry edible beans, soybeans and sunflowers left to plant. If we start looking at maturities of the various crops and looking at the average frost dates over time it would look like we still have time to plant most crops. There are varying maturity ranges within each crop and finding those earlier maturing crops might have all been bought up but there still should be some good choices available. The one thing we do not need is another dumper of rain across the region. Our soils have done remarkably well in storing a good portion of the rains we received but we are now at that saturation point and any big rain will make a big mess.
I need a little help in looking for an annual. I had a gardener in last summer with a made mess of volunteer purple Angels Trumpet growing in his yard. I have looked all over and have not found purple in any of the green houses’. If you know of someone with volunteers growing please give me a call.
