Howdy!!!!

The old song there is “frost in the air” hit a little bit this past weekend and is a friendly reminder that our average frost date of September 20 is fast approaching.  I did see a couple different locations with a very light frost west of Devils Lake, Sunday morning.  These cool nights and warm days is also a friendly reminder to all of us that this is the best time of year to attack those weeds that have been bugging us all summer long.  The perennials are busy taking in all of the nutrients they can for the long winter season ahead and applying a herbicide to those weeds with warm days and cool nights is ideal for death mortality.  As all herbicides indicate on their label and as I always mention when talking about any pesticide make sure to read and follow the label on the particular pesticide you are using as any off label applications can be very unrewarding to not only you but also your neighbor.

This past weekend I was working in the yard and a neighbor called for the need of tomatoes.  They came over and got some tomatoes and in the process got to show them my back yard.  It has been really coming together lately along with the garden produce.  My tomato patch has been on fire and there is a lot of differences between tomatoes.  If you are interested in learning which tomato seems to do better in my garden don’t hesitate to give me a call.  My tomatoes in general were free of all diseases and insects so got a very chance to compare the different varieties.

This past week I also got to do some pre-harvesting of corn.  Terry Gregorie has a growing degree study, along with a maturity study combination, to determine how growing degree days work with corn maturities for our area.  I first rep went pretty smooth and then I started noticing my thumb getting really warm and discovered a very large blood blister has formed.  A DIFFERENT harvesting method was soon learned.  It is very interesting to note the differences in maturities and also the stage of development to this point.

The Ramsey County Fair board is holding a clean-up, repair, and install day at the Fair board property west of Devils Lake on Saturday, September 15.  If you are interested in helping with day please feel free to come.  The day will start at 9 am.   Bring some equipment along such as rakes or shovels or hammers or paint brush.  See you on Saturday.
