Howdy!!!
Well, tis the season to be thinking of gardening and little grandchildren. This past weekend Deb and I became grandparents for the second time. Our daughter (Chris) and son-in-law (Al) provided the opportunity of a spanking little grand daughter. And of course right away grandma gets the brain thinking of shopping for anything and everything in pink. Our own immediate children give us great pride but when those little grandbabies come along they really capture your heart. The things they learn as they grow and go, and I mean go, is amazing. They are so observant and of course this action gets them into trouble, they need to figure out how those things work. Just the other day our grandson and parents were out for supper and the grandson was having a little difficult time. Dad said do you want to go home and the response was “ohhhhhhhh Nooooooooooooooo!. Grandma and I lost it. We started laughing so hard that we needed to turn away so not to encourage a little further action. Our new little baby girl has not led us down that path yet but you can bet there will be a time.
Don’t forget about the garden tour I am providing on Sunday, June 22. We will leave Devils Lake around 10 am and should return approximately 6 pm. I do have some very unique homes to visit and should be great fun. There is a registration fee and pre-registration is required. We have 10 already signed up for the trip.
We have all been anxiously awaiting for the day to plant our annuals and garden goodies but remember it is only May 14. The average frost date for our area is May 20th, which means frost up to June1 is not normal but does provide a slight chance of that happening. I know of some gardeners with tomato’s planted and would strongly encourage to not be planting those types of garden goodies. Things like: potatoes, peas, corn and onions could be planted but there is always a chance they could get hammered off. Most of the above mentioned vegetable goodies will freeze off but because most growing points are underground they should come back nicely, however I did have potatoes freeze off in Lisbon and they did not recover. So be cautious and don’t be in a hurry. All of our local nurseries will have supplies of plants which will last into the spring planting season.
Be sure to listen the horticulture radio shows that air twice daily once on KDLR and once on KDVL. I will provide timely topics for our outside activities and keep you posted on insects and other disease issues that might arise.
