Howdy!!!
I have been very busy the last couple of weeks and apologize for not getting a column in the paper but will stay in touch from now on. I thought maybe it was the cold weather keeping me off guard but realized it was just too many activities going on at the same time. It is funny how we think we get so busy and don’t have time for any other activities but just think we are already into the state basketball season. Class B girls this weekend, class A boys and girls next weekend and finishes off with class B boys the following weekend and we get to chance to watch a very good college game tonight, Wednesday, with Lake Region State college playing Williston for the conference title. March madness is such a great time, if you are a basketball guru.
We are also fast approaching the gardening season and am looking forward, to that time of year. I will be the first to admit I have a lot to learn about the gardening scene but I have learned a lot about the horticulture world and will continue to work in the direction that will help garden dwellers. To learn more about the Horticulture world I have ordered several seed catalogs. One night Deb and I were watching a little t.v. and scanning through the seed catalogs I realized just how many different seed catalogs I had sent for. I do have an order going in for some plants that are not bred for our climate but am curious how they might react in our cooler climate. I am even going to order in a cherry tree. I know you all think I am nuts but with a little experimenting maybe we can develop a micro climate that would make some of these unlikely plants survive here. It will be fun to see how things turnout. One of the more interesting catalogs I had ordered was an heirloom catalog. It was quite interesting looking back at varieties of tomatoes that I can remember but had forgot about. No matter the case I am looking forward to the gardening season.
I am planning a gardening Saturday, May 16. I am hoping the snow is gone by then and the temperatures are conducive to be outside. I would like to plan this day to be somewhat hands on with a good speaker or two to go along with this day.
I do need to touch on one more comment and that being all of the snow in the western area of our reading and listening area. I was in Bismarck on Tuesday and all of the snow sure takes the pressure off of the drought area. I do understand it does not mean the drought is over but the amount of snow will replenish moisture conditions for a while. It is really tough to see the wildlife suffer through this but sometimes that is the way. There were many areas of numerous pheasants and along with comes many dead birds along the highway. I just got a note this morning from our weather guru in Fargo and he is predicting heavy snow this weekend for the upper Midwest , we’ll see.
