Howdy!!!!
What a beautiful day in the neighborhood!!!!!!! Wasn’t this last weekend something special!!!!!!!!! I would prefer weather like that all summer but knowing that would be bad for our area producers. And how about all those geese that moved in over the last week, I can’t ever remember this many geese in our area. I saw a flock that looked like a forest as it flew through the sky because of the thick mass. Amazing, but yet very pretty. I drove by a cattle yard this morning. The newborn calves were our bucking and frolicking without a care in the world. Oh, how fun to be so young and not a care in the world.
This last week, at our coffee meetings around the county, a producer asked us for the telephone numbers of the NDawn systems in our area. The NDawn gives current information via the phone network or the wide world web. You can find current wind speed, temperature, bare ground soil temperatures, humidity and many other weather statistics. It is a very valuable tool for everyone. The telephone numbers are:
Crary
701-968-3022
Langdon
701-256-5437
Michigan
701-259-2104
Rugby
701-776-5694
Cando
701-968-3022
By direct dialing these numbers will give the current weather information for the area closest to your address. REMEMBER AFTER HANGING UP TO PUSH THE STAR KEY TO SHUT OFF THE TONER AT THE NDAWN SYSTEM OTHERWISE THE SYSTEM WILL STAY ON FOR A PERIOD OF A FEW MINUTES AND RUN THE BATTERY DOWN.
Crop Improvement

We still have bushels of Certified Tradition Barley, Registered SteeleND (HRSW)

the Extension office or the grower to obtain the seed you would need.

Planting your plants
in containers!!!!!
There are times when you will want to start seeds in individual pots rather
than communal trays. You will not
be able to seed as many plants but the seedlings will benefit by having extra
vigor.
Start by reading the planting instructions on the particular package of seed. Usually start with 2-3 seeds per pot. Instead of transplanting the plants as they reach a height of 1-2 inches, prune out the plants to leave 2 of the most vigorous plants remaining for transplanting at a later time. You can use either your fingers or tweezers, to remove the one or two plants, but be careful to not disturb the soil around the remaining plant/plants. Provide your plants with plenty of either artificial light or natural sunlight.
Start the hardening process, as explained in last week’s column, about a week before you wish to transplant your plants outside. You will find your plants having more vigor and ready for the outdoor environment very nicely using this method.
