Howdy!!!!

I am writing this column Monday, February 07, and the sun is shining bright although the word cool has popped back into picture.  I had a very fun weekend, this past weekend; I had a friend up to fish for the weekend and also had the participants here for the North Dakota Shooting Sports Certification class.  We had 16 participants after postponing the class because of weather the first try.  We will be gearing up for classes involving youth in the next month.  I am looking forward to the classes.  My wife and I also hosted a Super Bowl party yesterday.  We had a houseful and had a very good time although I would have preferred the Eagles to win.  I am not necessarily an Eagles fan but always like to cheer for the underdog.  It is always fun to see someone else take a turn at winning.  By the way, we did not have very good luck fishing Saturday.  The fish were there but just could not finesse them into biting.

Cooling your grain$$$$$$$$$$

Producers should be keeping a watchful eye on your grain bins.  The weather we had last week is very conducive to problems in the grain bin.  Aeration fans should be run to cool stored grain.  Stored grain likely warmed considerably last week thus creating the need to cool that grain back down or even take the time to dry the commodity.  The allowable storage time is cut in half with each ten-degree rise in grain temperature.  I have visited with producers, who have already had storage problems, so monitoring your grain is very important.  Watching markets can be a frustrating event, with the present commodity prices, and trying to sell commodities that have been damaged is even more of a challenge.

Crop Improvement Seed Increase!$!$!$!$!

The Crop Improvement Association has new Foundation Increase seed available for producers, to apply for.  We have not been officially notifies of our allotments but should be getting an increase allotment of Glenn (HRSW), Stellar (Barley), Pembina (Conventional Soybean), Foundation Tradition and Carter Flax.  If you are interested in growing increase seed for the Crop Improvement association please stop by the Extension office for more information on the varieties and an application.  The Extension office number is 662-7027.
