Howdy!!!!
Good by January, “Hello” February!!!!!!  Doesn’t that sound like music to your ears?  Our coldest days of the year are generally during January, which means we might still get a few cold days but spring is fast approaching.  It is amazing how time flies as just last night; I mentioned to Deb that we have been back to Devils Lake for ˝ year.  Seems like yesterday that I started with Ramsey County Extension.  I have been very busy working with folks around the county and also with multi county programming.  As usual, with Extension, much of our programming takes place during the winter months to accommodate the audience that would attend our programming.  We offer workshops to every facet of the community and strife to stay on the leading edge of information pertinent to our area.  If you have a topic you would like to our office to do a workshop about please don’t hesitate to call or stop by our office and we will best accommodate your needs we can.  We have many workshops coming up in the next 4 months, so watch our calendar for upcoming events.

North Dakota Shooting Sports Certification Class$$$$$$$$
We will be holding shooting sport certification classes, in two discipline areas this weekend (February 4 & 5).  We are offering training in Archery and Rifle.  This training is usually offered in either Fargo or Washburn, so here is the opportunity to volunteer your time to teach hunting safety and proper shooting form to our youth of the county.  We do have one free registration pass left, so if you are interested in volunteering your time, to help others, here it is.  The class starts Friday night at 6 pm (Armory, Memorial building); Saturday starts at 8 am and will conclude about 5 pm.  Trainers come from Fargo and Bismarck.  To get registered for the classes, call the Extension office at 701-662-7027.

Mealy Bugs on your plants????????
Every year we get many questions pertaining to the controlling of Mealy bugs.  They are difficult little pests to control but persistence will pay dividends.

Mealy bugs are slow-moving, soft-bodied insects which appear to have been dusted with flour. They are about 3/16" long and may have waxy filaments extending from rear. Eggs are laid in clusters of white fuzzy material. They are found on stems and leaves, especially along veins. Strong measures are necessary to control mealy bugs. If one plant is infested, try hosing with a water spray or use cotton swabs dipped in alcohol. This process must be repeated every five days. Dip or spray badly infested plants with an insecticide every five days until there is no sign of insects. Add a mild detergent to the spray (1/2 tsp/gal water).
