Howdy!!!!!!
Well we finally got a little heat. Unfortunately we also ended up with too much rain “again” this past week. The crops were looking pretty good, but with all this rain, we are losing enough crop to probably make an average crop at best. Don’t get me wrong the remaining crop looks very good but make up for the lost crop the remaining will have to very good.
This rain reminds me a lot of 1993. I remember being at the state fair and being paged over the intercom. K.O. Arneson was looking for me for not only for advice but also a hand. His cattle were literally up to there neck in water. The kids were showing sheep in the open sheep show so Deb and I left them behind with the Ed and Jon Brown, who were also showing sheep in the open show, and headed for home. I will never forget the sight we saw as we got near Edmore. “WATER, WATER AND MORE WATER”. By the time we got to K.O.’s, he had already found a neighbor, with a trailer, and had his cattle hauled to market. Enough was enough.
I talk of this because as I was sitting at the lake this past weekend reminded me of the destruction water can do, in enormous amounts, in a very short period of time. It runs over roads, dikes, farmland and communities with no discretion in sight or mind. It can come and go in matter of days and leave tragedy everywhere or come and stay, like Devils Lake, and leave communities wondering if there really is a sight in mind. How much higher can the lake get??????????. It is really funny, as I write this article this morning and talking about the lake, because my grandfather, Monroe Weed, talks of the time that he would walk across Creel Bay to get my Grandmother, Vera, working at the country club. In my calculations that is about 40+ feet of water from that era. Well enough of the water problems and let’s be thankful of the beautiful warm weather we are having. This weather is so refreshing from the cold year of a last year and you can really tell in the lawn, garden and crops.
Wasps???????
I have been getting several questions about wasps and wasp’s nests and how
to get rid of the pesty little rascals. Wasps can be tricky to get rid of as once they have stung
you; it is difficult to get back in a position where they might have that
opportunity again. A wasp nest, if
not controlled, can go from a few wasps to over 3000 wasps in a very short
period of time. The best time to
deal with a wasp nest is the cooler part of the day, which now would be in the
twilight hours. There are products
available to help control wasps with the majority of them needing to be applied
directly to the nest. Just remember
if you are dealing with wasps dress accordingly and talk every precaution on
approaching the nest. If you do not
like to address the problem there are exterminators also available.
