Howdy!!!!!
Tis the morning to be wet!!!!!!!!!  I called around the county this morning (Monday) and found varying amounts of rain.  The southern tier of the county is talking something of 1.3-3 inches of rain and the northeastern part of the county is something in ½ inch range.  It would appear the rain should be beneficial for most areas of the county.  Thank goodness we did not receive the rain that the east central part of the state received.  I heard amounts as high as 6 inches.  The unfortunate thing with this rain system is the cool weather that is in the forecast for the end of the week.  Possible frost for the end of the week may slow the progress of most crops but in general most crops should fair nicely through this system.  We will have to wait and see what the weather actually does, as weather has a tendency to change very quickly.

Zone hardiness?????
I took my wife, mother and mother-in-law plant shopping on Sunday and had a very nice time.  As usual, there never seems to be enough time in the day for checking out the new plant varieties available for us, this growing season.  I did however notice perennials, that are available that are better adapt to zone 3 hardiness.  As we purchase these plants we need to be aware of the potential for winter kill with these less hardy plants.  We will need to plant these plants in areas that are protected from the harsh winters we have here in North Dakota.  I purchased 5-6 different perennials that are borderline, for our area, to see how they grow and can use that information to make recommendations.

Question of the week???????
Is there a home remedy repellent that will work to keep deer and rabbits away from my flowers and gardens?  There are some home remedies available but the success rate has been very sporadic.  A couple of home brew remedies would include:

Pepper Repellent:  To one gallon of water add 2-4 tablespoons of finely ground Cayenne or Habanero peppers, 2-4 tablespoons of Tabasco sauce and 2-4 tablespoons of Elmer’ glue.  Blend together and spray or sprinkle on the foliage and/or stems of the plant you are trying to protect.

Homemade deer repellent with eggs:  In a blender, mix two eggs to one cup of water.  Blend well then add one cup of skim milk and any type of sticker such as soap.  Put this mixture into a sprayer and spray a light mist over the plant.  There will be very little odor but deer will not find it appetizing.  Re-apply after heavy rains.
