Howdy!!!!!
Burrrrrrrrrrr! I am definitely not ready for this white stuff. I will
never wish something this bad onto someone else but am very glad the storm made
it’s presence a little further west and north. I have many jobs left to do in
my yard and thought maybe I would have it done before I left to go pheasant
hunting; but I guess that idea has changed now, although the snow is melting
very nicely. I do remember snow storms in October, but do not remember a storm
closing roads and even major highways. I received some pictures of Dickinson
last Friday and things are not very pretty. Snow banks looking like something
we would experience in January. For those of you who have garden producer to
still bring in, all is well. Things like carrots, potatoes and beets should all
fair well. Those vegetables all seem to sweeten after some cold weather, and I
know for a fact, that someone I know still has his carrots in the garden.
Some gardening tips for next year??????
The landscape design class, I am offering now, had some very good discussion
last Tuesday night. Discussion was had on planting different tree species and
perennials. I reminded everyone that just because the tree looks pretty in a
picture that you need to do your home work before planning your landscape
design. There are many tree and flower species that are not cold hardy for our
area and planting them may cause not only financial distress but also the lack
of a beautiful plant, in a particular part of your garden. As we prepare for
next years’ garden we need to do our homework. We work on our landscape designs
every time we work on our yard and are always thinking of a plant or tree we saw
somewhere we would like to add to our yard. “CHECK YOUR PLANTS BEFORE BUYING
SOMETHING THAT WILL NOT WITHSTAND OUR HARSH WINTERS”.
Question of the week????
The question that came to me this past week was: How come I have no Acorns
on my trees this year? I did not know that answer and after doing some
investigation found that the likely problem came from the disruption of the
flowering process. During the flowering process we may have had strong winds
that blew damaged the flower or heavy rains which created a malfunction of the
flowering process. We certainly did have that kind of damage back in June.
Thanks to Todd Weinman of Cass County Extension for the help.
