Howdy!!!!
This past week sure has been a busy week for many folks in the lake region area.  It was a very busy week for me as meetings never seem to stop.  This past week has also been a very disheartened week for me and our family as we lost a very dear friend.  I many times talk about in-laws and out-laws and this past week I happened to be the out-law who was affected.  We lost an aunt from Munich (Pauline Zimmer) that will be missed forever.  I know that as we speak she is watching down on us and keeping that watchful eye over all that she loved.  I had many found memories of Pauline and her husband (Roman) whom Pauline now has joined in a happy home forever.  I think one of the most recent memories happened just a week ago as she was hospitalized.  When Deb and I arrived Pauline looked at us and said I remember you, as you are always a cheerful, jolly, person and mentioned my name.  We had a very nice visit with her and the family that evening.   The family had been staying with her through the night and as we were all saying good night, Pauline asked Deb and I too stay with her that night instead of one of her children.  That really touched my heart to think that someone would ask such a thing of my family.  Pauline and Roman raised a very fine family, who are always compassionate to others just like their folks were.  I talk of this, not only as they will be missed, but that we need to keep family in our thoughts throughout the busy world we live in.  We never have time for many things in our busy lives, including ourselves, but sanity does come into play.  As I look around the Lake Region area and watch the harvest winding down on the first round of harvesting we can be very thankful for what we have.  There are crops that did not hold up to par this year creating heartache in some families, as well, but no matter the case we still have our families us for support.

Crops in general!!!!!!
As the first round of harvest is winding down we find things in the farming world that we as producers need to be paying attention too.  Canola is the first crop that comes to mind.  Black Leg played a major roll in yield potential of canola throughout the lake region.  I found fields in the area that had up to 100 percent black leg and the yield on those fields were somewhere in 500-1000 pound range.  Black leg affects the growth of the plant and can actually shut the plant down by affecting the roots.  Those fields that did not have a heavy black leg problem and white mold problem will be somewhere in 1500-2000 pound range, which makes me come to point of crop rotation.  Even though canola has been a very good cash crop we do need to watch our rotations and not follow canola either with canola or another susceptible crop too quickly.  The small grains did not fair well through the wet season this spring but if Alsen was part of the rotation the problems were not quite as severe, in fact did pretty darn good.  The soybean, edible bean, corn, flax and sunflowers are looking very good at this point.  They have been basically insect free for the growing season and in general receiving timely rains.

Lawns and our weeds????
This is a very good time of year to be taking care of our weed problem.  Weeds are actively growing preparing for the long winter season ahead of us and thus are taking in nutrients for the period.  The nights are cool and the day time temperatures are in the 70’s making for a perfect time to be applying herbicides on our lawns to control these pesty weeds that have been bugging us all summer long.  When applying that herbicide make sure to read the label and follow the directions on that label.  ALWAYS BE AWARE OF YOUR NEIGHBORS YARD AND ALSO YOUR OWN AS HERBICIDES CAN MOVE AROUND WITHOUT YOUR HELP.
