Youth Showcase Learning

4-H Achievement Days give youth opportunity to showcase items from projects they have taken this 4-H year. This week I invite you to join us in celebrating the accomplishment of area youth.

Rolette County’s 4-H Clothing Revue will occur at 8 p.m., July 10th at the Mt. Pleasant School of Rolla. The public is invited to view garments or household item members have sewn in the “Sew and Show” division.

In the “Buy and Show” division members are asked to show their consumer skills as they plan for and select wardrobe items that are versatile, economical, of good quality relative to price, match their wardrobe needs and well suited to their body build. The garment must stake up to these criteria and look good on the individual.

In a third division, “Decorate Your Duds” members showcase a purchased or sewn garment they have embellished. They model their personalized and unique creation. The public is invited to the Rolla School at 8 p.m. for the Clothing Revue Show.

On Friday and Saturday the public has opportunity to view the static exhibits on hand at the Rolette County Recreational Facility at St. John. You will have the chance to see a wide range project items on display from 1:30 to 4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. on Friday and again from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday.

Saturday offers the Rolette/Towner County Horse Show beginning 9:30 at the St. John Riding Arena. Members will be demonstrating their horsemanship skills in classes of halter showmanship, western riding, reining, trail class, western horsemanship, hunt seat equitation, equitation over fences, hunter hack, pole bending, barrel racing and keyhole.

I want to say hats-off to our fine exhibitors at the Bottineau County Livestock Show. Jimmy Gilge and Sonja Gilje showed their beef animals earning honors of recognition. Jimmy and Sonja earned blue ribbon honors with their Angus steers. Sonja received Rolette County Grand Champion Steer honors and a plaque sponsored by McCumber Angus Ranch of Rolette. Jimmy received Reserve Champion Steer placing and reserve place plaque sponsored by Starr Charolais of Bisbee.

Jimmy Gilje excelled in the Beef Showmanship class earning reserve place showmanship honors.

Sonja’s Angus steer took honors in the Rate-of-Gain contest. Out of twenty entries her animal did the best job of transferring food to body weight over a three and one half month time period.

Consumer Choices

Consumer Choices participants judge product information and are asked to give oral reasons for ranking four products according to the criteria noted in a story situation. Study guides, previously received, help members understand terminology and know what to look for when they judge products. This year’s contest was held at the Rolette Memorial Hall July 25th.  It included classes of cell phones, bicycles, trail foods, measuring cups, and snacks.

Participating in this year's Consumer Choices contest July 25th were Everett Brown, Anne Brien, Heather Brown, Claire Brien, Marcie Armstrong and Alexandria Brown. High point honors were earned by Claire Brien, pre-teen and Marcie Armstrong teen division.

Anne, Heather, Claire, Marcie and Alexandria will have opportunity to participate in the State 4-H Consumer Choices contest July 24th at the State Fair, Minot.
