Healthy Oils

Which oils are the best for your health? Why are Omega 3 and Omega 6 oils being promoted? What are trans-fats and are they healthy? These are just some of the questions I will address in a public presentation “Healthy North Dakota Oils” to be held at the Rolla City Hall 7:30 pm, November 2, 2006. This program is open to all at no cost. I hope you will come to this educational program.

'Eat Smart. Play Hard.' Poster Contest

North Dakota youth have more time to come up with award-winning ideas for this fall's "Eat Smart. Play Hard." poster contest. The entry deadline has been extended to Dec. 1.

The contest, which the North Dakota State University Extension Service, Center for 4-H Youth Development and Bison Athletics sponsor, is open to youth ages 8 to 19 as of Sept. 1.

Contestants are required to create posters that educate North Dakota youth and adults about the "Eat Smart. Play Hard." program's themes: the importance of families eating together, making healthy food choices and getting regular physical exercise.

Obtain an entry form at the Rolette County Extension Office and mail your poster to the Center for 4-H Youth Development, Attn: Eat Smart. Play Hard. Poster Contest Entry, 219 FLC, Fargo, ND 58105.

Posters will be judged in two age divisions: preteen (ages 8 to 12) and teen (ages 13 to 19). Winners in each division will receive a cash prize of $75 for first place, $50 for second place and $25 for third place.

NDSU Sponsors Greenhouse Informational Meeting

The seventh annual informational meeting for professional and hobby greenhouse operators will be held on Nov. 3 at the North Dakota State University North Central Research Extension Center in Minot. The meeting will begin at 8:30 a.m.

Although the meeting is designed for greenhouse and nursery operators, all gardeners are invited, and the information provided should be of interest to most garden enthusiasts, says Ron Smith, NDSU Extension Service horticulturist.

The keynote speaker is Kerstin Ouellette, Pen and Petal president. Pen and Petal is an advertising, marketing and public relations agency in Falbrook, Cali. Ouellette received her master's degree in Munich, Germany. She worked at nurseries in Germany and Denmark prior to moving to California. She is a well-known speaker in the greenhouse industry and has written books on container gardens for professional and home gardeners. She will present a program on container garden designs for today and tomorrow and do-it-yourself and don't-do-it-yourself greenhouse industry marketing.

Additional presentations at the meeting include a review of the weights and measures issues, and a discussion on generic pesticides by Rob Gensch, J.R. Johnson Supply Co.

NDSU is an equal opportunity institution. This publication will be made available in alternative formats for people with disabilities upon request, 701-477-5671.
