Consumer Choices Judging

Updated March 26, 2008
Why Consumer Choices?
Everyday you make choices. It might be what you are going to eat, what you are going to wear, or what to buy. Consumer Choices teaches you how to make decisions based on information that you have learned and studied and on facts that you have collected. It can also help you learn to defend your decisions.
The 4-H Consumer Choices Contest can help you practice making decisions by matching your knowledge, skills and abilities against those of others. You will learn to rank articles or products over others based on standards and quality.
Who Takes Part in Consumer Choices Judging?
4-H Consumer Choices is open to any 4-H member--boy or girl. Beginners Division (ages 8 to 10) will judge classes on bicycles, measuring equipment and snacks.
Junior division members (ages 10 to 13) and senior division members (ages 13 to 18) will judge classes on bicycles, cell phones and trail foods.

Who is Eligible to Compete?
Contestants must be enrolled in 4-H during the current year. Each county may enter five participants at the state contest in the senior division and five participants at the state contest in the junior division. Counties with less than three participants in an age division may enter as individuals OR may combine with other counties. Senior division participants must be age 13-18.

How Does the Stark-Billings County Contest Work?
County workouts and contests are scheduled below. Workout scores will be averaged at the county events to determine team members. To be eligible for team selection, 4-Hers must attend one of the two workout sessions plus the judging contest, unless prior arrangements have been made with the extension office. All participating 4-Hers are recognized.
The set of standards (guidelines) for the classes are available at the extension office or see 2008 Consumer Choices Judging. 4-Hers who read through the standards before the workouts are better prepared to judge the classes.
