William Bloom Scholarship

Anna and William Bloom were longtime 4-H leaders with the Taylor area Grandvale 4-H Clubs in the 1940s through the early 1960s. In honor of her husband, Bill, Anna set up a memorial scholarship with the ND 4-H Foundation. The interest on the principal is used to fund the scholarship. Preference is to be given to someone from Stark County, and to a student entering the field of extension service agent work.

Applicants are to have completed at least three years of 4-H program work. The scholarship is to be used for their freshman year of college. Applications are due May 1 of the current year to the Stark-Billings County Extension Office. The scholarship is awarded to the recipient after the first day of their freshman fall semester at the financial aid office of the college/university of their choice.

4-H and Nickelodeon Partner to Launch New Game National 4-H Council has partnered with  Nickelodeon's "Big Green Help" to create a brand-new, interactive online game-- "Flip N' Flow"--featuring the network's animated boy-genius Jimmy Neutron. The game is in support of 4 H's Science, Engineering and Technology communication campaign to spark youth interest in science and prepare one million new young people for America's technology workforce.

Nickelodeon's "The Big Green Help" is a kid-led movement that provides information and tools to help explain climate change to young people, and connects them to energy-saving and earth-friendly activities in their everyday lives.

The "Flip N' Flow" game is available online at 4-H.org. Youth can play the game and access materials to share with friends. Check out this fun activity which gives youth and mentors the opportunity to learn about water conservation and challenges them think about steps they can take to participate in going green!

Consumer Choices

Every day we make choices. It might be what to eat, what to wear or what to buy. 4-H Consumer Choices teaches 4-H youth how to make decisions based on information learned and studied and on research done. 4-H Consumer Choices teaches youth to defend their consumer decisions.

4-H Consumer Choices events help 4-H youth practice decision-making skills by matching their knowledge, skills and abilities against those of others. Youth learn to rank items over others based on standards and quality for these items.

Practices will start later this spring. You must attend one workout to be considered a member for the Stark-Billings County Preteen or Teen Team. These Preteen and Teen members will participate in the state contest at the North Dakota State Fair.

Classes for 2009 are Beginners Bread, Pets, and T-shirts Junior and Senior Credit/Debit Cards, Pizza and Sunscreen.

If you would like to participate in this 4-H learning experience please contact Sharon.

State Bill #2009 Needs Your Help

The North Dakota State Fair is asking for your help to encourage local legislators to approve the Governors budget. Governor Hoven has included full funding of a new grandstand as well as an increase in premiums (prize money awarded to exhibits including 4-H and FFA).  Senate Bill #2009 is the actual legislation containing the State Fair request for funding.

The best way for students to learn about the legislative process is to be involved with the process. The State Fair is asking 4-H Club members to write a letter or email their State Legislators in support of SB 2009 as a 4-H project.

See How to Contact Legislative Entities. Contacts can be found . Members can write their legislators asking for their support of SB 2009 and full funding of the Grandstand as well as an increase in their premium money. They can also choose to write about one of the following topics

What projects they exhibited at the Fair

What they like best about the State Fair

What ribbons and awards they have won

What is their favorite memory of the fair

How many years has their family attended the fair

These letters can be brief and the same letter can be sent to several legislators. 4-Hers can track the progress of SB 2009 as it moves from the Senate to the House by checking the State of North Dakota website.
