This event is highly recommended by your County Agent, Kurt Froelich. Kurt attended this event in his youth and says that he gained a lot of knowledge from this program. If you would like to learn more about how our legislature works than this is the event for you. Mark your calendars for Sunday, February 15, and Monday, February 16, for the North Dakota 4-H Citizenship in Action.
This two day event will be held at the State Capitol and Comfort Inn Hotel in Bismarck. All youth 13-18 years old are eligible to attend. The purpose of the event will be for North Dakota youth to learn how the state legislative process works and how their voice and participation in decision-making can make a difference in their local communities. Youth will also have the opportunity to display a part of their countys outstanding 4-H program to the legislators.
Registration deadline is January 30. There is a $40 registration fee, which includes materials, lodging, and meals. For more information contact the Extension Office.

The contest is open to active 4-H members. Essays are due at the Center for 4-H Youth Development by February 1, 2009. The state will select one essay to be forwarded to the Foundation office by March 1. For more information on the contest contact the Extension Office.

The Internal Revenue Service continues to implement several changes regarding the accountability of private non-profit organizations across the nation and these changes also affect 4-H. Starting in 2009, 4-H groups/entities will be required to file the appropriate tax forms. 4-H Clubs, 4-H Councils, and other 4-H related groups need to be aware of and take action on these changes.

Eat Smart Play Hard Poster Contest
If you are 8 to 19 years old, you have a chance to test your creative talents, win prizes and encourage your friends and family to live a heart-healthy lifestyle.
The North Dakota State University Extension Service is holding an "Eat Smart. Play Hard." poster contest and is looking for posters that educate youth and adults about the importance of eating calcium-rich foods and/or playing hard to build strong bones. All entries must be postmarked by March 31.
"Eat Smart. Play Hard." is an initiative of the U.S. Department of Agriculture Food and Nutrition Service. It aims to make America's children healthier by providing practical suggestions to motivate kids and their caregivers to eat a healthful diet and be physically active.
The NDSU Extension Service and Bison Athletics launched a statewide campaign of the same name in 2005. See NDSU Eat Smart. Play Hard. This is the third annual "Eat Smart. Play Hard." poster contest the NDSU Extension Service and Bison Athletics have sponsored.
Posters will be judged in two age divisions: 8 to 12 and 13 to 19. Contestant ages will be based on how old they were on Sept. 1, 2008.
Judges will look for how well the posters present information and educate others about a healthful lifestyle. Judges also will consider the poster general appearance.
The posters should not exceed 22 inches by 28 inches. They can be made with construction paper, poster board or tag board, but they can't be three-dimensional. Also, contestants can't use copyrighted characters such as Snoopy, Charlie Brown or cartoon characters.
Prizes will be awarded in both age divisions. They are a $50 gift card for first place, a $35 gift card for second place and a $15 gift card for third place. In addition, all contestants will receive a certificate of recognition.
Send entries to the Center for 4-H Youth Development, Attn: Eat Smart. Play Hard. Poster Contest Entry, NDSU Dept. 7280, P.O. Box 6050, Fargo, ND. 58108-6050.
