4-H Showcase Guidelines

  1. Roughrider Days Fair & Expo/4-H Showcase participants must be pre-registered for this event by June 13. See Showcase entry form
     
  1. 4-H Showcase is an opportunity for 4-H members to participate in the display of exhibits for the Clothing Revue (Buy & Show, Sew & Show, Decorating Clothing Item) and Project Expo (Food Fair, and Project Expo).
     
  1. 4-H Showcase will be July 2, at the Days Inn Grand Dakota Lodge. 4-H members must report to the 4-H Showcase registration table at the Days Inn Grand Dakota Lodge at 10:30 a.m. for instructions on display table location, etc. All display setup should be completed by 11 a.m. Judging of the 4-H Showcase will begin at 11 a.m. Project Expo displays can be taken down at the static exhibit release time on July 2 at 6 p.m.
     
  1. Exhibits in the Project Expo and the Clothing Revue must relate to a project in which the 4-H member is enrolled.
     
  1. For Teens: Clothing Revue Buy & Show category participants must be enrolled in the Clothing Decisions (Discovering Choice/Managing Choice) project. All accessories must be brought to Showcase the morning of the event. For Preteens: Clothing Revue Buy & Show category participants must be enrolled during the year in Learnabout, Pathways to Adventure project, Discovering Choices or any other clothing-related project.)
     
  1. Decorating Clothing Item category: Clothing items can be purchased or sewn.
     
  1. Age is determined as of September 1, 2007. Exhibit divisions are: Cloverbud (age 6 and 7); Clover (ages 8 to10); Preteen (ages 11 & 12); Teen (ages 13 to18).
     
  1. At the county 4-H Showcase, a 4-H member may exhibit in two Showcase categories. If selected as a county winner in more than one category, they can only enter one state 4-H Showcase category.  4-H members cannot enter other exhibits already on display as static exhibits in the 4-H Showcase.
     
  1. Participants in the Project Expo need to provide their own card table and all needed equipment. Teen Clothing Revue participants are required to construct their entire outfit. Preteen Clothing Revue participants must construct at least one-half or more of their outfit. 4-H members must bring the printed pattern guide for their project.
     
  1. The county dress code will be followed for the 4-H Showcase, except for the Clothing Revue (Sew and Show, Buy and Show) participants who will be wearing their 4-H Showcase exhibit.
     
  2. 4-H members selected as division winners in the Preteen and Teen divisions of the Clothing Revue and the Project Expo will advance to the state 4-H Showcase contests which will be held during the 2008 North Dakota State Fair on Monday, July 21.

4-H Clothing Revue

The Clothing Revues are 4-H Showcase exhibits. 4-H members construct a major portion of a total outfit (Sew and Show) or assemble an outfit that consists of purchased garments (Buy and Show or Decorated Clothing), select accessories, and model the outfit to be evaluated during a public clothing revue. The garment may not be exhibited as a static exhibit.

Sew and Show Clothing Revue

Objectives:

The purpose of this program is to help youth:
bullet To develop leadership abilities, build character and assume citizenship
responsibilities.
bullet To build self-confidence and poise by developing: An understanding of "self"
in order that the individual may select and make clothing becoming and
expressive for his or her personality.
bullet Skills necessary to plan, select and construct clothing for different occasions.
bullet An ability to select suitable accessories.
bullet Knowledge of and skill in the use of a decision-making process.
bullet To make and model a garment that is needed in the wardrobe.
bullet To develop poise, good posture and good grooming habits. 
bullet To share knowledge and skill learned through Sew and Show Revue participation
with others.

Any youth enrolled in a project related to clothing and textiles may enter.

Cloverbud, Clover and Preteen Divisions:

Construct half or more of clothing being modeled. For example: a simple shirt, pants, shorts, skirt, blouse, jumper or dress. Items like a cap or scarf are not acceptable. Clothing modeled must be part of a project related to clothing and textiles.

Teen Division:

Construct the major part of clothing being modeled. For example: a dress, shirt/blouse and pants, shirt/pants and vest (shirt/blouse could be purchased). Clothing constructed must be made as part of a clothing and textiles-related project in which the member is enrolled. Clothing constructed must be appropriate for modeling in a public revue. NOTE: Sleep wear is not acceptable for the teen division.

Select suitable and complementary accessories.

Bring constructed garment, pattern guide and accessories to the event. Judging will include fit and appearance of outfit on model, knowledge of subject, construction of garment and poise, posture and grooming within the abilities of the 4-H member.

Awards Schedule: An event is conducted for cloverbuds, clover, preteen and teen. One person is selected to participate in the preteen division and one person is selected to participate in the teen division at the North Dakota State Fair.

The North Dakota Sew and Show Revue is held at the North Dakota State Fair. All entries at the North Dakota State Fair will receive a ribbon. Participants having outstanding overall presentations will be recognized with an Award of Excellence. Award of Excellence recipients may compete another year in the same event.

Buy and Sew Clothing Revue

The purpose of this program is to help youth develop life skill experiences by developing:
bullet Self confidence and poise.
bullet Develop understanding of "self" as the individual selects clothing which
is becoming and expressive of his or her personality.
bullet Skills necessary to plan and select clothing for different occasions.
bullet Skills necessary to select appropriate accessories.
bullet Select and purchase or recycle garments that can be used effectively in the wardrobe.
bullet Develop poise, posture and grooming habits through modeling experience.
bullet Share knowledge and skills learned with others.

Any youth enrolled in the "Clothing Decisions" project may enter. 

Purchase or recycle a major item of clothing which relates to a wardrobe plan. This item must be appropriate for modeling in a public revue. The following are suggested types of garments appropriate for county 4-H buy and show revue:

Bring purchased or recycled garment and accessories to the event. Fill out a Buy and Show Teen 4-H Clothing Fact Sheet.  Evaluation is based on categories included on 4-H Buy and Show Revue Evaluation Form.

Decorating Clothing Item

Any youth enrolled in a clothing project may enter. 

Purchase or recycle a major item of clothing which relates to a wardrobe plan. This item must be appropriate for modeling in a public revue. Bring purchased or recycled decorated garment and accessories to the event.

Awards Schedule: An event is conducted for cloverbuds, clover, preteen and teen. One person is selected to participate in the preteen division and one person is selected to participate in the teen division at the North Dakota State Fair.

4-H Project Expo

The 4-H Project Expo is one of the 4-H Showcase exhibits. Stark-Billings County also holds a Food Fair event which is entered at the North Dakota State Fair in the 4-H Project Expo. 4-H members are involved by developing an educational table display that is related to one of their 4-H projects.

Any youth enrolled in 4-H may enter.

Select and research a topic or project directly related to a 4-H project in which the member is currently enrolled. Prepare an exhibit for display from this project. Examples are:

"Picture Perfect" - Photography
"Sew What's New" - Clothing
"Horse Sense" - Horse
"Get a Blast out of Rockets" - Aerospace

Prepare posters or examples to illustrate steps or add interest. The entire display must fit on a standard size card table.

Become familiar with the Project Expo Score Card.

Bring the card table, display supplies and holders for posters to the event. The entire display must fit on a standard size card
table.

Arrange the display and stand near it, neatly dressed -including a white blouse/shirt with a 4-H emblem on the front. Be prepared to answer questions from the judges and public. Questions may be asked about steps in preparing the article, cost, results of study, reasons for doing project, etc.

Due to health regulations and space limitations, no live animals will be allowed in showcase exhibits.

Awards Schedule: An event is conducted for cloverbuds, clover, preteen and teen. Stark-Billings County selects three persons to participate in the state preteen division and three persons to participate in the teen division of the North Dakota State Fair.

All entries at the North Dakota State Fair will receive a ribbon. Outstanding overall presentations will be recognized with an Award of Excellence. Award of Excellence recipients may compete another year in the same event.
