Risk Management Seminar
The Dunn County Extension Office will be hosting a Risk Management Meeting in Killdeer at the Buckskin meeting room. This meeting will be at 9 a.m. on June 26, 2008, with registration at 8:30 a.m. Because this is a time of much uncertainty and volatile market prices, producers will want to attend this meeting. The focus of the meeting will be cost control and risk planning for forage producers.
National Crop Insurance Services is sponsoring this series of meetings in North Dakota to bring producers up to speed on the insurance products available to reduce risks and manage risks. Their portion of the program will center around the relatively new plans for pasture, rangeland and forage insurance. Dr. Laurence Crane will be the spokesperson for the National Crop Insurance Services.
Also on the program is Cole Gustafson from NDSU who will speak on the current conditions of the Ag. economy, energy markets, ethanol and other timely topics.
Harlan Hughes, former livestock economist from NDSU and professor emeritus will talk about feed cost increases and impacts on the cattle industry. Hughes will evaluate alternative ranch production/marketing programs built around higher corn prices. Harlan is now living in Wyoming and will return to North Dakota to present his perspective.
Dr. Matt Diersen, SDSU, will discuss the current forage outlook for the nation and region and the resulting impact of increased grain and forage prices on the ranching sector.
This seminar comes at a very opportune time. The volatility of grain and energy markets along with the scarcity of feed and forage will continue to affect our livestock producers and our local economy.
