Fall Fertilization of Lawns
The fall season is a great time for fertilizing your lawn. Lawns usually require more nitrogen than either phosphorus or potash. Kentucky bluegrass or bluegrass-red fescue mixtures require about three pounds of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet per growing season. This amounts to about 15 pounds per season. A 20-3-6 fertilizer formation is recommend. However, it is not recommend to apply all the fertilizer at one time. A person should apply one third of the fertilizer around June 15th. The second third should be applied around September 15th and the final third around Columbus Day. If you remove clippings and heavily water you lawn it will need about 50% more fertilizer.
Spraying For Leafy Spurge
This is a good time to spray for Leafy Spurge. Leafy spurge infests about 1.2 million acres in North Dakota and costs the state over 75 million dollars annually in lost production. Leafy spurge is more susceptible to chemicals in the fall than other times of the year. Leafy spurge is on the noxious weed list. Therefore it is the landowners or operators responsible to try to control this weed.
