Felt-tip Marker Stain

Date: April 1991 (Revised April 1995)

Source: NDSU Extension Youth and Family Specialist

Stains caused by felt-tip markers and pens can be very difficult or impossible to remove. If the garment cannot be replaced or is costly, take it to your local drycleaner and ask to have the stain removed. Drycleaners have stain removal methods that are not available in the home.

If you decide to try to remove the stain, sponge the stained area with a drycleaning solvent such as Energine. Try to remove as much of the stain as possible. Rinse the stained area with cool water. Do not machine dry the garment as heat could set the stain.

If the stain remains, sponge it with rubbing alcohol. If this treatment is not effective, rub a small amount of detergent into the stained area and launder the garment following instructions on the care label.

Before attempting to remove a stain, test the suggested stain removal product on a seam allowance, inside pocket or other inconspicuous area. If you do not have the time or the stain removal products on hand, or are concerned about damaging the garment, ask your local drycleaner to remove the stain. In some cases stains are impossible to remove either by home methods or by a drycleaner.
