Performance Horse Seminar Slated for Bismarck

The fifth North Dakota Performance Horse Seminar will begin at 9:30 a.m. (CST) on Saturday, Jan. 17, at the Bismarck Kelly Inn. The seminar is sponsored by the North Dakota Racing Commission and the North Dakota State University Extension Service. Registration, payable at the door, is $15 per person, $20 per couple or $25 per family.

Doug Householder, an extension horse specialist with Texas A&M University, will be the featured speaker. He will offer three presentations: "Nutrition of the Performance Horse," "Condition Scoring Horses" and "10 Things Moms and Dads Must Do to Assure Their Kids Have the Most Meaningful Experience with Horses."

Householder serves on the graduate faculty at Texas A&M and has been with the extension service there for 25 years. He judges 15 to 20 breed and state 4-H horse shows per year in the United States and abroad. Householder has prepared many articles and papers for publication, and his office provides leadership for the 9,000-member Texas 4-H Horse Program.

Another scheduled program speaker is Dr. Neil Dyer, assistant professor of veterinary medicine and microbiology at NDSU. His presentation is titled "The Role and Expectations of the Official Race Track Vet." He received his D.V.M. from Iowa State and has completed post-graduate work in pathology. He currently serves as the North Dakota Racing Commission's veterinarian.

Also speaking will be Randy Blaseg of Rapid City, S.D., who serves as the chief racing steward for the Dakotas. He will be discussing the roles of officials at a parimutuel race meet. Blaseg is a former trainer and jockey and has served as a racing official at race tracks in Alabama, Texas and Nebraska.
