Sheep Day to be Held in Hettinger

The 39th Annual Sheep Day is scheduled to run from 9 a.m. to about 4 p.m. (MST) on Wednesday, Feb. 11. The day will begin with a one-hour barn tour of projects and a viewing of "Ram Test" rams at North Dakota State University's Hettinger Research Extension Center. The research updates, luncheon and presentations that follow will all take place at the Hettinger Armory.

Updates on six research projects are scheduled from 10:15 a.m. to noon. Paul Berg, NDSU sheep researcher, will discuss the "Lean Lamb Project." Roger Haugen, NDSU extension sheep specialist, will present "Hulless Oats as a Feedstuff for Sheep." Woodrow "Chip" Poland, livestock specialist at NDSU's Dickinson Research Extension Center, will discuss "Field Peas as a Feedstuff for Sheep." Dan Nudell, research economist at the Hettinger Research Extension Center, will offer a presentation titled "Feasibility of a Lamb Slaughter Plant in North Dakota."

Rounding out the morning sessions are presentations by Jack Dahl, an NDSU research technician stationed in Hettinger, and Jeff Held, extension sheep specialist with South Dakota State University. Dahl's talk is titled "The Impact of Multi-species Grazing on Your Range Resources" and Held's presentation is "RAM Test Information: How Do You Use It?"

"Meeting Flock Health Needs with Declining Resources," presented by Dr. Jay Bobb with the Pipestone (Minn.) Veterinary Clinic, is scheduled to begin at 1:10 p.m. Running concurrently for homemakers will be programs on "Spinning and Knitting" and "Lamb Cookery." Presenters for the homemakers' programs are Joanne Runner, Bowman County extension agent, and Annette Lloyd, a Wautaga, S.D. sheep producer and wool processor.

Slated for 1:45 p.m. is David Saxowsky, an associate professor in the NDSU agricultural economics department. His presentation is titled "How Will the Future Affect my Ag Enterprise?" Following Saxowsky will be another presentation by Nudell, "Critical Success Factors to a Profitable Sheep Enterprise."

Dennis Kubischta, a producer from Hope, will present "Why Sheep Work at My Place." Closing remarks will come from James Marshall Jr. of Oriska, president of the North Dakota Lamb and Wool Producers Association.
