The Southeast North Dakota Feedlot School is scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday, Jan. 28 and 29, at the Wyndmere Fire Hall. The school, designed to provide advanced education for existing cattle feeders in southeastern North Dakota, is sponsored by the North Dakota State University Extension Service. It opens at 11 a.m. on Wednesday and closes at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday.
The opening session features Rick Stock of Cargill who will discuss feeding wet corn gluten feed. Following lunch, NDSU Extension livestock specialist Karl Hoppe will review grid pricing for cattle. Russ Danielson, associate professor of animal and range sciences at NDSU, will lead a discussion of marketing and industry alliances. Jim Williams of the American Hereford Association and Ken Conway of Angus America will also participate.
Other topics for the afternoon include a discussion of implant strategies by Hoppe and a review of breakeven analysis software by Dale Siebert, NDSU Extension agent in Richland County. NDSU Extension livestock economist Harlan Hughes will give an evening session on cattle economics and price forecasts. Jerry Vangness, a cattle feeder from the Walcott area, will close the day with his perspective on pricing.
Thursday's sessions will focus on feedlot health issues. Gerry Stokka, Kansas State University Extension veterinarian, will discuss how to identify sick or almost sick calves and how to treat them. He'll also review some vaccinations and mass medications for the feedlot. NDSU Extension veterinarian Charlie Stoltenow will discuss antibiotic sensitivities and will review services available from the NDSU Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory.
