North Dakota State Tax Revenue Up

North Dakota collected $1,064 million in state government taxes in 1997, 8 percent more than the $985 million collected in 1996, according to the latest "Economic Brief" from the State Data Center at North Dakota State University.

More than half of the 1997 tax revenue came from sales taxes. About 15 percent came from individual income tax.

North Dakota's tax revenue per capita in 1997 was $1,660, the 19th highest per-capita amount among all states. North Dakota ranks 25th in per-capita property tax and 41st in per-capita individual income tax.

In the United States as a whole, eight states accounted for about half of all state tax revenue: California, Florida, Illinois, Michigan, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Texas.
