Service Industry Main Contributor
to North Dakota State Product

The service industry accounted for the 17.5 percent of North Dakota's gross state product in 1996, more than other sector of the economy, according to a recent Economic Brief from the North Dakota State Data Center at North Dakota State University.

"Business services are the real growth sector in North Dakota's service industry," said Richard Rathge, director of the center. "Output among business services more than doubled between 1989 and 1996, growing to $329 million. Social services and health services saw a similar dramatic rise in output, expanding 101 percent and 56 percent, respectively. Government followed at 15.1 percent, with finance, insurance and real estate third at 12.7 percent."

Between 1989 and 1996, North Dakota's gross state product in services increased by 67 percent. The mining industry accounted for the smallest share of the gross state product, 3.1 percent.

North Dakota's gross state product totaled $15.7 billion in 1996, just 0.2 percent of the U.S. total, making it among the smallest of state contributions. The contributions of California (12.6 percent), New York (8.0 percent) and Texas (7.2 percent) comprised more than one-quarter of the U.S. total.

According to the Bureau of Economic Analysis, gross state product, often considered the state counterpart of the nation's gross domestic product, is the value added in production by the labor and property located in the state.
