The North Dakota State Experiment Station announces the release to certified growers of Ransom, a hard red winter wheat cultivar.
Ransom is white-chaffed and awned. It is one to two days earlier in maturity than the Seward variety and about 6 percent shorter. It is slightly better than Seward and equal to Elkhorn in winter hardiness. In straw strength, it is similar to Elkhorn.
In 32 trials from 1991 through 1997, Ransom averaged 5 percent greater yield than Seward, 3 percent greater than Arapahoe and Elkhorn, and 16 percent greater than Roughrider. Its average test weight is equal to Seward's. It is resistant to stem and leaf rust. Named after Ransom County, its best performance has been in southeast North Dakota.
Ransom is a good quality hard red winter wheat. Protein content, flour extraction and wet gluten are mid-range between Roughrider (higher protein) and Seward (lower protein). Dough-mixing properties of Ransom are rated as goodbetter than Seward and equal to Roughrider. Bread-baking performance is also good, equal to Roughrider.
Ransom is an increase from the cross of Seward and SD76705 made in 1984 at North Dakota State University. Ransom was tested in North Dakota yield trials beginning in 1990 and at the Northern Regional Performance Nursery beginning in 1992.
Plant variety protection will be applied for without the Title V provision.
