Temporary Grain Storage Publication Available from NDSU
A newly revised publication, "Temporary Grain Storage" (publication AE 84), is available from the North Dakota State University Extension Service. The publication includes information on placing grain in buildings, commercially available storage units and alternative storage facilities.
"Grain in temporary storage facilities is at a much higher risk of problems from pests, wind and moisture," notes Ken Hellevang, author of the publication and agricultural engineer with the NDSU Extension Service. "Preparing or setting up temporary storage facilities correctly helps minimize that risk."
The section on using existing buildings provides guidelines for the maximum grain depth for pole buildings and gives guidelines for reinforcing buildings. It also includes plans for building a liner for the walls.
There are guidelines for building bins using plywood sheets and building self-supporting walls. There are also suggestions for using silos. Addresses for several companies that provide grain covers, temporary bins and round plastic tubes are listed.
The publication provides guidelines for piling grain outside, including recommendations for site selection and preparation, covers and aeration. Formulas and tables are provided to help determine storage capacity. Average filling angles are listed that can be used if pile heights need to be estimated.
The publication is available at your county NDSU Extension Service office or can be ordered from the Distribution Center, Box 5655, NDSU, Fargo, ND 58105-5655, phone (701) 231-7882 or fax 231-7044.
