Two Bison Informational Meetings Scheduled
Two informational meetings for new and prospective bison producers are designed to answer questions about improving management practices for existing herds and launching a bison enterprise. Registration for both meetings begins at 11 a.m. One meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 13, at the Bronze Boot in Grand Forks, and the other for Thursday, Oct. 15, at the German-Hungarian Club in Dickinson. After a complimentary lunch, both seminars will commence at 1 p.m.
Featured speakers include Dr. Ken Throlson of New Rockford, N.D., a veterinarian and internationally renown bison producer with 25 years experience in commercial production. He will discuss year-long care and management of the bison cow herd. Another New Rockford bison rancher, Mark Ivesdal, will describe facility design and handling techniques. Dennis Sexhus, general manager of the New Rockford-based North American Bison Cooperative and a bison rancher himself, will explain how the producer-owned organization functions, including marketing bison through the co-op.
A question-and-answer session involving a panel of experienced bison producers will conclude the meeting. Both events will also feature informational displays about bison research at NDSU, bison equipment and producer organizations.
Besides the NDSU Carrington Research Extension Center, the events' sponsors include the Minnesota, Manitoba, Dakota Territory and North Dakota buffalo associations.
