Former NDSU Ag Dean Receives Harvest Bowl Recognition
H. Roald Lund, former dean of agriculture at North Dakota State University, has been named recipient of the 1998 Agri-Business Award and will be honored during activities at the 25th Anniversary NDSU Harvest Bowl Nov. 6 and 7.
Lund, a North Dakota native who was born at Hillsboro and grew up at Christine and Nome, earned B.S. and M.S. degrees in agriculture at NDSU and a doctoral degree in plant breeding and genetics at Purdue University. As a faculty member at NDSU he taught agronomy courses and received the Alpha Zeta Outstanding Teacher award. He became assistant dean of the College of Agriculture and assistant director of the Agricultural Experiment Station in 1970 and was named dean of the college and station director in 1979. He returned to the teaching and research faculty in 1994.
During his years in administration Lund was active in building faculty and facilities, from 85 faculty members in 1969 to over 150 by the mid 1990s. Major construction during his tenure included Hultz Hall, Van Es Laboratory, Loftsgard Hall and the Industrial Agriculture Communications Center, as well as improvements at the off-campus research extension centers and acquisition of the Central Grasslands Research Center near Streeter and the ranch unit of the Dickinson Research Extension Center near Manning. He was also instrumental in securing federal and private funding for the Northern Crops Science Laboratory and feed and durum mills for the Northern Crops Institute.
He and his wife Janet live in Fargo and are the parents of four children.
He was active in the regional and national Deans' Council for Administrative Heads in Agriculture, the National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges, and numerous other professional and agricultural organizations. In 1980 he was named Master Builder of Men by the National Farm House Fraternity.
In other Harvest Bowl activities, outstanding agriculturists from all counties in North Dakota and five counties in northwestern Minnesota will be honored. As part of the silver anniversary observation, the first class of Harvest Bowl honorees from 1973 will also be recognized. Since 1973, over 1,650 outstanding agriculturists have been honored by the Harvest Bowl committee.
Also recognized at Harvest Bowl activities will be the 1998 student-athlete recipients of Harvest Bowl scholarships and the Robert Lauf Memorial Scholarship. Harvest Bowl scholarship winners are Brian Boll of Keewatin, Minn., a member of the Bison football team, and Janna Ruebke, Bison volleyball player from Twin Valley, Minn. Receiving the Lauf scholarship is Jane Even, a member of the Bison women's basketball team from Sioux Falls, S.D.
All honorees and scholarship winners will be recognized at the annual Harvest Bowl dinner and dance starting at 6 p.m. Nov. 6 at the Fargo Holiday Inn. Honorees will also take part in a campus tour on Saturday and will be recognized at the Harvest Bowl football game between the NDSU Bison and Minnesota State University-Mankato Saturday night.
