Meeting on Fall Crop and Livestock Marketing Set for Nov. 13, 16.
This fall many farmers and ranchers must decide whether to store or sell various crops, and whether to sell or background calves. Interactive video meetings set for Friday, Nov. 13 and Monday, Nov. 16, that are sponsored by the North Dakota State University Extension Service, may help in those decisions. The meetings, each covering the same material, will be presented at 15 interactive video network locations across the state, will feature four NDSU specialists, and will be moderated at each site by an agent with the NDSU Extension Service.
George Flaskerud, crops marketing specialist, will discuss the price potential for spring wheat, durum, corn, barley, soybeans, sunflowers, canola and edible beans, and will compare the potential to storage costs to help farmers determine when and how to sell.
Harlan Hughes, livestock marketing specialist, will analyze the current marketing situation and marketing alternatives for 1998 calves and discuss the profit potential for retaining 1998 calves.
David Kraenzel, agribusiness development specialist, will present an overview of value-added activities on the horizon for North Dakota and the region. This will include crop production, product marketing, and the current status of alternative industrial use crops and alternative livestock potentials.
Andy Swenson, farm and family resource management specialist, will discuss the effect of trends in wheat yields and costs of production on break-even prices and enterprise selection. Trends on farm financial performance and family living expenses will also be presented.
The program is free and open to the public.
It will be presented Nov. 13 from 1 to 4 p.m., Central Time, at the North Dakota State College of Science, Wahpeton (Mildred Johnson Library, Room 117); at Jamestown State Hospital Learning Resource Center (Education Building, Rm 320); at Sitting Bull College, Fort Yates (Room 5); at University of North Dakota, Grand Forks (Gamble Hall, Room 120); at UND-Lake Region, Devils Lake (Administration Building, Room 171); at UND-Williston (Crighton Building, Room 101); at Fort Berthold Community College, New Town (220 8th Ave. N, Room 13); and at Little Hoop/Cankdeska Cikana Community College, Fort Totten (Higher Education Office).
It will be presented Nov. 16 from 4 to 6:50 p.m., Central Time, at Bismarck State College (Vocational Technical Center, Room 216); at Dickinson State University (North Campus, Room 104); at Mayville State University (Library, Room 113); at Minot State University (Administration Building, Room 158); MiSU-Bottineau (Arntzen IVN Building, Room 100); at North Dakota State University, Fargo (E Morrow Lebedeff Hall, Room 183); and at Valley City State University (Vangstad Hall, Room 115).
