South Central Beef Symposium in Jamestown on Dec. 9
Improved grazing techniques, beef quality and the use of new
technology by beef producers will be highlights of the South
Central Beef Symposium in Jamestown on Wednesday, Dec. 9.
The event begins with registration at 9 a.m. at the Gladstone
Select Inn and adjourns at 4 p.m. Registration is $15 per person
or $25 per couple which includes the noon meal, refreshment and
proceedings handbook. The event will also include a trade show
featuring area businesses serving the livestock industry. For
more information on the event, contact the extension offices in
Stutsman, Kidder, Barnes and Foster counties or the Carrington
Research Extension Center at (701) 652-2951.
Speakers and topics include:
- Derek Bailey, assistant professor at the Northern Ag
Research Center, Montana State University, will outline
how livestock grazing distribution can be modified by the
strategic placement of supplements. Bailey will also
outline results of research to determine if cattle could
be bred for improved grazing distribution.
- Jeff Printz, range specialist with the USDA Natural
Resources Conservation Service, will share how the
Environmental Quality Incentive Program can be applied to
area ranches.
- Paul Nyren, director of NDSU's Central Grasslands
Research Extension Center at Streeter, will discuss the
application of geographic information systems (GIS)
technology to ranch management.
- Jack Salzsieder, marketing consultant with Commodity
Services Inc., will discuss basic marketing plans for
livestock operations.
- Mark Smith, assistant director of the National
Cattlemen's Beef Association, will review results of
research to identify specific product quality defects in
non-fed cattle and the costs of those defects to the beef
industry.
- Greg Lardy, NDSU extension beef specialist, will outline
how moving calving dates can affect production and
economic traits of the cow-calf operation.
- Ryan Taylor, rancher and writer from Towner, will give a
luncheon performance featuring rural humor and
motivation.
